"and Dale Fleet wins his heat."

He did this several times during indoor...

He was trying to explain altitude training...and he was waxing about Diego Estrada...and said "Diego....uh, I can't remember his last name, I apologize..bla...bla...bla...3 sentences later "Estrada, Diego Estrada..."
lol.
So, who's Dale Fleet?
Cmon people, if you were listening he said he was at the same high school state meet as Dale Fleet..or at least that is what he said. So when he saw MAC running high school meets in San Diego he said I bet that's dales son. Obviously he kept saying Dale but meant MAC.
Chill out people. There is a mute button.

Mac Fleet's dad -- an 8:53 two miler in high school in the early 70s.

No, it is worse than a "chill out" situation. People have the sound on for a reason, sometimes in a scoring meet like this you want to hear about point scores and point implications. In most Diamond League meets, most of us know the sport well enough we don't need the chatter.
So, Larry correctly called him "Mac Fleet," before and during the race, and he shared the anecdote about Dale winning the CA state 2mile and Mac winning the 1600 and that they are the only two father/son winners in CA state history.
Than...he called him Mac through out the race.
After the race, talking about the results of the 1500 heats, he was like "and of course Dale Fleet won heat 2."
Larry is like both an overly nervous person in front of a mike, and a doddering old fool.
He can clearly do the research, but he needs to also rehearse just announcing calmly and intelligently.
And he and Dwight Stones need to have a better system to not over talk each other.
For the 10,000 meters? It was pretty much all Lawi...and there were no other runners in the freaking race.
He had 30 minutes to go over the starting list and talk about who was in the race...DURING THE RACE.
How many times did the camera linger on the lame Harvard runner and Rawson was off on some inane tangent?
Missed opportunities...He talks earlier about Eugene, and how much the athletes appreciate being appreciated by the fans...and then in the 10,000 HE TOTALLY MISSES THE FACT THAT STINSON AND MELANCON(SP) wore Prefontain style throwback uni's...unlike the rest of the team that wore "whites" for the day.
When you got 32 minutes of time to fill...that would have been a "neat" mention. He's old enough to see it, and figure it out. But knowing him, he probably thought they were from Baylor (because of the colors.)
Example, when Gary Hill announces...he's FREAKING PREPARED. Granted, as stadium announcer there's no place to do anecdotes, but he does mention most of the runners AND their accomplishments. Often twice.
Larry was an embarrassment to the 10,000. All this yadda about Lalang. High altitude training. Trying to set up the 5k tomorrow by waxing warm about Deigo from N. Arizona...Diego..."oh my, I can't remember his last name, I apologize..." WTF?
Every single runner who made that race had accomplished something, and deserved to be mentioned, even if Larry just read from top to bottom the media cheat sheet he had to have been given.
Dwight Stones made a mess with the lame improve on the age of Kenyans. Instead of using a metaphor about getting a dog at the dog pound and not knowing how old it is...and then morphing that into a leg being a log and cutting it off and counting the rings...etc. He should have just talked about the fact that there is an issue that some USA athletes are concerned about...older foreign athletes taking scholarships away from USA born athletes. And older foreign athletes having a developmental advantage over USA born athletes that start as 18 year old freshman.
--I give Stones credit for at least knowing about the issue. Perhaps he read Ben Lindamens(sp) piece in TFN a few months back... But rather than talk about it in a smart way...which would have been "there's been a long term problem, or suspected problem with E. African athletes incorrectly stating their age when applying for US scholarships, so what we have here is probably 2 African athletes 3-5 years older than the likely American born first finisher..."
This is just the lame aszed stuff I can remember from when I was paying attention.
And again, you want the sound up when runners are running for team points etc.
What's a matter, A Duck, didn't Phil leave your meet pass at the gate?
If you would do a better job, why don't you announce it?
I thought that Larry said he was retiring from announcing last year?

You can't just say 'waxing.' Just 'waxing' does not mean speaking at great length or praising something. Unless this is some butchered slang that KIDS THESE DAYS are using.
I'm starting to feel sorrry for A Duck. He's got unresolved issues with being a lame duck runner and he appears to be mentally challenged.
I agree with you when you say he should talk about other runners in the race.
He covers the SEC for track and field so he is going to talk a lot about Arkansas and Kentucky. He has some weird fixation about Kentucky.
I'm surprised by the time you put into writing your post. It was fun to read and had some solid points.
Stick-with-e : mind being less of a jerk by leaving out the mentally challenge card?
shut up
If by these days your mean 1870s then you are right. From the Lowell [MA] Daily Citizen (1875): The newspapers which publish these charming narratives show at least their own estimate of the character of their readers, and their own determination to make the press, the engine over which they wax so eloquently, the minister of refinement and a softer civilization.
