Knocks 10+ secs of in a few weeks? Methinks that is a bit optimistic. I'd love to eat my words.
Definitely optimistic, and probably wrong. But I was extremely impressed with 13:23 in his first serious race in eons, and took him at his word that he wasn't pushing too hard and wasn't even thinking about running for the standard last week. A few other things to consider:
* He is fired up after exceeding everyone's expectations, including his own.
* He's an emotional guy, and will ride that rush to the limit, even if he hurts himself in the process.
* Both he and Schumacher would love nothing more than to get the standard out of the way now and have six weeks to think about nothing but a June 20 mini-peak. They might even see it as the only way to have a realistic chance at top three other than getting the standard at USAs -- and we know how he feels about "doing all the work" (which that would probably require).
Disclaimer: If conditions aren't good, they'll probably look for a better opportunity.
