I think stage fright was a big reason. Aja is fantastic.

they apparently didn't like to tour, preferred to write and record.

As good as Aja is, I think I like Katy Lied just a bit more.
"languid and bittersweet" describes a few women I've met.
Do you mean "similar to" a large Dildo brought to life in the story "Naked Lunch" by William Burroughs.
Or, "enjoy" the 70s rock band.
Why yes, this Letsrunner like Steely Dan.

I thought we were talking about the second definition here...
Urban legend at William and Mary was that members of SD were kicked out for smoking pot. Hence, they never went back to their (my) old school...
Any truth to this?

Becker and Fagen met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, not William & Mary. But Bard is often referred to as the 'William & Mary of the North'.
I have read that 'My Old School' is somewhat autobiographical about their time at Bard so the pot bust theory is probably close to the truth.
I was smoking with the boys upstairs
When I heard about the whole affair
I said 'Oh, no, William & Mary won't do now'

Great, great song. My favorite album of their's. But Countdown to Ectasy deserves mention, too.

Agree it's a great song, one of SD's best. The opening guitar riff and solo by Larry Carlton are nasty good.
And Royal Scam is a great album. Gotta go with Kid Charlemagne as my favorite song on that one. The guitar solos are ridiculous.
I love Steely Dan. My wife and I just saw them in Milwaukee. I'm 34 and my wife is 28. Needless to say we were spring chickens at that show.

G. Gordon Liddy was the County ADA that signed the arrest warrants.

2. Great music
3. Mini skirts
4. Dirt roads to run on
5. Afros
6. Jean jackets
7. Cool sunglasses

SD has been the soundtrack for my growing up and growing old...
Fagen once said that most pop songs are too short to really tell a complete story, so their lyrics are only telling bits and pieces - so no way to get very much meaning out of them
very few have clear cut meanings/symbolism, e.g.
Hey 19 - being unable to communicate with young girls/fans
Dr Wu - drug addiction
if i were going to space or a desert island, and could only take one band's music, it would be the Dan
OP
This is for you and all the other Yacht Rockers out there who love Steely Dan.

Watch the whole series. It's hilarious, especially if you know anything about 80s music.
I'm a big fan of "Boddishatva"
Nice recommendation, but in 2013, we provide links when talking about music or women.

I am a huge fan, have seen them on tour multiple times. Don't get me started on favorite songs. I'm nuts about them.
Eminent Hipsters by DF is a hilarious read. Recommended highly.
I'm way deep into nothing special.
