Never mind, I'm getting 15:27 5k, 4:18 Mile, 1:58 800 for Cam Levins. Significantly better than Sell, but then again he's significantly better now than Sell was.

I have a lot of respect for Sell. But don't you think he was just severely under-trained in high school? No doubt he worked his arse off, but the guy has talent. If you're not a top dog in high school or college, it can take some time just to become a saavy racer. Sell is obviously tough as nails, but he's also a great racer. Always seemed to run the race that he needed to perform at his potential. That comes with experience.
Daniel Tapia is next. He ran 2:16 in the high wind and rain at CIM 2012. Just moved to altitude to train FT.
I agree.
Christian Hesch. That guy's the man.
If it was that easy to predict, then Brian Sell wouldn't be the first Brian Sell.
You are right we should have a deep amount of 2:10 -2:11 guys by now. It's funny but in the US a 2:14 marathon is considered better now than it was 30 years ago. Heck, there were college guys at UCLA running 2:13 and 2:14 back then. The problem is exactly what the next poster after you said...living in poverty just to be 5th at the trials isn't really that attractive to college grads these days...and I can't say that I blame them.

Aaron Braun, Scott Bauhs, Jake Riley, and Cam Levins can be compared to Sell I think. In terms of being underdogs, blue collar, etc.
Jake Riley ran 9:00 for 3200 his senior year.
Brian Sell.
We've had 100,000 Brian Sell's in the past 100 years.

Why the hell do you have to live in poverty? You should be able to have a part time job and still train your butt off. Running, even at world class level, takes very little time compared to other endurance sports. You should also do what I did in the 1990s, when I was a national caliber XC skier: find a woman with a decent salary.

Wrong. 22nd at NCAA cross is All-American. SO you are saying 22nd at the Olympics is just another schmuck? You have no respect for what he achieved with his hard work. As far as "living in poverty," Sell had a job at Home Depot. He wasn't raking in the dough, but he worked while he pursued a dream, made ends meet, and did more than 99.9% of other American distance runners.
The next Brian Sell is none other than Saugatuck Michigan Native and CMU Chippewa Ethan Lievense.
JAke Krong?? Seriously? He is a hard worker and has run some good races but that guy will NEVER run anything faster than 216 or 217 in his career. I respect the hard work he puts in, but lacks racing experience. I would put my money at least on a guy who has proven he can compete in the NCAA let alone on the roads as well. There are tons of guys in Utah that beat him all the time. I could name over a dozen runners in utah that could probably beat him. Especially if they trained for a marathon like he does. He's a great runner, hard worker, but by any means is he a brian sell.
I think we can definitely have another Sell type runner in the US. US running has come a long way but not so much in the marathon it seems. Who is our 3rd best guy? It seems like if you ran 10 different marathons with all the best US runners, you could get a different 3rd place finisher 10 times.
Who will it be? I have no idea.
Craig Leon!
Another vote for Aaron Braun. 4:25ish for the 1600 in high school, but after spending the last few years running tens of thousands of miles at altitude I believe he has a great shot at being an olympian.

Aaron Braun was a stud in college, he doesn't count.
Why do we want another Brian Sell? I understand our last Olympic marathon performance wasn't good, but wouldn't you much rather have our top marathoners being extremely talented with a ton of upside? Sell maxed out his potential, which was pretty darn good obviously, but I'd much rather have a guy who's been a champion at every level earning a marathon team spot.
There will undoubtably be another Brian Sell, since our marathon depth is still pretty weak, but I am more hopeful that the American contingent will continue to get faster and more talented.

Jake has run numerous sub-1:06 halves at altitude and has only been training seriously for about 2 years. I would be shocked if he's not in the 2:12-2:14 range by 2016.
