Joe Douglas has been the number one coach of the Santa Monica Track Cub in Santa Monica since the 1960s. Joe ran for Mihaly Igloi and is one of his biggest disciples. He formed the club. Joe Douglas is a very fine coach. That is why Todd Harbour trained with him him. Joe is an agent also. The Santa Monica Track Club still exists and Joe is still the coach. Whenever he gets an athlete in shape to make it on the international or even top national scene they are given a shoe contract and forced to leave him. He had several athletes at the Olympic Trials and I believe he had at least one in a final in Athenes.
I don't know officially, but I've known Coach Harbour personallyfor a long time. I would say in his prime, he was ~5'10" and ~130-135 lbs., he was lean.
Here is Harbour in the 1980 Oslo 1500. At the starting line, he's standing next to a 6'0" John Walker around the :30 mark. Harbour in bib #7 and Walker in bib #50.
And you don't know choking.....although you do know oral. Choking is being the fastest ever collegiate miler and then getting 18th.
2nd is not choking. 2nd is 2nd.
A better video isolating Todd Harbour here. 5 minutes in. Todd was a smooth-smoothie runner, as you will see.
Great race! Loved Dr Wessenhage! When I was stationed in Germany 🇩🇪 he and Harald Schmidt were the athletics heroes of the country
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
