dan phaff (spelling) at texas
John Rembao, has coached elite caliber athletes in many different events from jumps to distances. Don't know where he is coaching at now tho? But he is a good coach.
Hands down, Jerry Baltes at GVSU. The man just plain knows his stuff, and on top of that can relate very well with his athletes and is an extremely fun person to be around.
jeez jerry, would you PLEASE QUIT pumping yourself up!
Forget Dan Pfaff... look to D3 and Pat Healy at UW-La Crosse!
Multi-events coach Ed Miller at the University of California wins hands down and he worked with one of the worst TnF budgets in the Pac-10:
*Chris Huffins (NCAA Champ; 1996 Olympic bronze medal decathlon)
*Ross Bombem (approx. 4th 2000 NCAA decathlon, 6th 2000 Olympic Trials)
Other recent Cal AAs under Ed Miller:
*Bubba McClean (decathlete)
*Missy Vanek (heptathlete)
Also note the range of Mike Gilbert, recently departed University of Colorado sprint and hurdles coach. He coached several indoor-46-second 400-meter types, as well as worked with Anthony Washington who won the gold medal in Seville, Spain, at the 1999 IAAF World TnF championships.
Check that. Anthony Washington = discus thrower.
Dan Phaff IS the best all-around coach in the NCAA. Here are some of his credentials:
Coached:
Donovan Bailey to a WR in the 100m!!!
Terry Thornton to an NCAA 10k Championship!!!
Bothwell to a WC medal and Multiple NCAA CHampionships in the HJ!!!
And he's the THROWS coach at the University of Texas!!!
I challenge ANYONE to come up with a set of credentials as varied or successful as that.
the Ark coach
His name is John McDonall (sp?) and he doesn't coach all the events. He coaches the distance runners. Dick Booth coached the jumpers.
Will Wright at Southern CT State Univ.
He consistantly gets the most out of his talent. Hard to recruit away from other big schools in New England area when you have no money. His program is always in the tops for New England as a Div. 2 school. He coaches/coached everything from pole vault to the jumps to the sprints to distances. And he is the best guy you will ever meet.
Southern Connecticut State U. That is a TRACK powerhouse!!!
High school- Joe Newton
D3- Al Carius
D1- Vin Lanana (distance anyway)
If I were a multi event guy, I would want to be coached by either Dave Neilsen of Idaho State or Jerry Quiller of Army!
Al Baeta
Tom Tellez, he's had success coaching at basicaly every event.

Please stop people. In the college ranks, it's John Mcdonnell. Period. Until Lanana can get THIRTY more national championships, it's ridiculous not to give Mcdonnel his due.
Professionallly, how about Bobbie Kersee. Coached his wife Jackie Joyner, and Gail Devers (up until last year) to multiple gold medals in international and Olympic competitions.
Will Wright? You gotta be kidding. Hammering everyone into the ground and leaving a few guys standing at season's end doesn't qualify you a a good coach, nevermind "best coach ever". Lananna has built an impressive resume; there might be others who have earned that title over the years. If we're talking high school, then Joe Newton would be the guy.
