I still keep in contact with some of the runners at a local high school and for their training in December/January, for about 8 straight weeks, it is nothing but P90X every day. No other conditioning that they're aware of and no type of running, this is for sprinters and distance runners and is mandatory. I find this odd.
Back in 2003, I did a round of Power 90 (the pre-cursor to P90X). One of the reasons I did it was I was having a hard time with calf issues then (as I still do today), so over the course of 90 days, I ran only 10 miles. I lost 16 pounds in those 90 days and ran a 5k (I was 36 then) right at the end in 17:48 (far off my lifetime PR, but decent for then, especially with the next to no running I had been doing). Prior to doing the Power 90, I had been doing training runs at 9 minute pace, and that was seeming somewhat difficult.
Power 90 and P90X both have decent cardio work in them, and with the way they do circuit training with the weights, that raises your heart rate too. Would I JUST have high school distance runners do P90X? No way. Could you be surprised at how well you might be able to run a 5k after doing a round? Yep (especially if you had weight to lose).
