This is true to an extent but it doesn't have to be. I was quite happy with my social life as a Princeton junior/senior undergraduate without really ever going to the clubs.
There are other social spaces: for example, while the administration has kept the co-ops kind of small/marginal they are wonderful communities, and at least one of the upperclassman residential college communities is pretty good.
I say all this only because I think a lot of potential Princeton undergrads are really turned off by the eating clubs (I know I was), and it is good to know they're not the be-all end-all socially.
