Patience in all that you do. Nobody in the world gives a s--t who won Footlocker in 2007. The longer you can build base, and train/condition yourself sensibly, uninterrupted by illness or injury, the better you will eventually get.

This. Also, race your races, not your workouts. Understand why you are doing today's run (easy, tempo, reps, whatever) and what it is supposed to accomplish and it'll be easier to resist the need to be a workout hero.
Eat something asap after you run, every time.
