The coach of my son’s XC team roughly advises his varsity/varsity bound runners to do about 30 miles a week the summer before freshman year, 40 before sophomore year, 50 before junior year, and 60 before senior year. He has had many good teams – very consistently in the top 20 in the state.
I was hanging with a parent from a neighboring school district last night, and he said their coach has told all their kids to get up to 60 a week this summer. I told him that is probably right for maybe 5 kids on the team, but the others should dial it back or risk injury or burnout. And, I told him I seriously doubt this coach will really have 30 kids doing 60 miles a week in August.
Anyway, what is about right, say, for a good high school runner, varsity level? It seems to me our coach has it about right.
