They're juniors. And really fast. They have two teammates (who transferred in) also under 5 minutes in the mile and went 1-2-3-6 at the Michigan state meet. They also have the national 4*8 record in 8:48. They do this with minimal coaching and are pure raw talent.
I've seen them race almost 30 times and they are healthy looking. Please don't assume skinny girls aren't healthy.
Healthy? As in she doesn't have a deep rich tan being from Michigan and running indoors in the middle of winter?
Why don't you post a newer photo, like from today's race, Friday June 29th 2012?
Any hints on if they want to stay and be Wolverines?
Or travel out of state? Maybe Pac-12?
There were more than a few college coaches in attendance at the race today.
They've been studs a long time. Hannah ran 4:20 1500 last year and was in World Youth Final with Cami Chapus. Won New Balance indoor mile title in March with 4:42 few days after their team won DMR in 11:38.
Then she was 2nd behind Mary Cain at Juniors to make the Barcelona team with a 4:18. Haley rarely beats Hannah, but has a good set of PRs, too. They've been consistent from year to year.
Not sure if parents ran.
Here's the lowdown on the Meier twins:
Hannah Meier is perhaps the most underrated high school distance runner in the country. She is VERY good and very consistent.
Last year she won the indoor mile in 4:48 FROM THE SLOW HEAT, and this year she won in 4:42. Last year she beat Cami Chapus to win the World Youth Trials in 4:24 (went on to run 4:20 at Worlds) and this year got second behind Cain at Juniors in 4:18 (and will probably run faster in Barcelona). She's consistently improving.
Also has 56 and 2:06 speed, and good cross country strength (17:20 5k).
Haley doesn't beat Hannah, but has run in the 4:40s many times, although she's struggled with a few injuries this year.
They have a great coach and smart training, and LOADS of potential. They'll definitely be a big pick up for any college.
Note: This exhibition mile in Eugene was just for fun (although I'm sure the runners wanted to win). Most have been taking time off after track and weren't taking the race too seriously.
Hope the twins pick Oregon i think they will Track Town U.S.A BABY
Hannah PR'd last year at Lille. PR'd this year at Indianapolis. Ranks 2nd in 1500 (to Cain) this year. Best junior year 1500 meter runner in country. Good academic high school. Can do much better than Ann Arbor as both athlete and student. Will see if she PRs in Barcelona. Should get to final. Don't know if twins want to stay together in college. Great prospect....Cornell? It was good enough for Morgan Uceny. Maybe Dartmouth. Eugene is overrated.
