Have to admit I think this makes sense...his speed seems gone & he's increasingly unlikely to get the 1500 A, but perhaps he can hold up for a 5k -- which might be a good fit for him.

Why do I get the feeling that this is a "pump and bump" post with the same dude posting under different user names?

John Cook had past success with male middle distance runners.
When he started coaching Shalane Flanagan people were wondering if he could coach a female distance runner.
She won an Olympic medal in the 10,000.

he's run 3:37 this year, so he has to drop only about two seconds to get the 1500m A standard of 3:35.50. that is not a huge amount. He should get in one more 1500m before the trials, and not warm up for 2 1/2 hrs beforehand. But it's wise to give the 5000m a shot as well, because milers do very well at that race, he's done lots of strength training and outworks Andrews, and he's run 13:10 in the past, when he was probably a 3:49 miler. It would not surprise me a bit to see him get the A standard in either event. But to make the team over Lomong, Rupp, and Lagat, as well as Ritz and possibly Torrence, is still tough sledding.

3:37 is about a 13:30 so he could get the A if he has a good base and has been doing a lot of strngth stuff. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the case. He went to Vig because he wanted more middle distance training. Running 800's indoors, 600 meter time trials early on and then moving up to the 1,500 later doesn't seem to indicate a lot of strength work has been going on.

Also, Wariner should hop in an 800m somewhere--what's he got to lose? It's not like it would kill him.

i'm all for rooting for webb and who knows what he could do in a 5000m meter right now. we're liable to see him walk off after 3000m if he isn't on pace and just as liable to watch him drop a 13:18 solo effort where he looks like he couldn't be more bored. i think this is what has prevented him from running more 5000 meters. i think he is bored with that event in the sense that he has to seem like he's out there "jogging" for most of the race (a typical US athlete race prior to 2010).

at this point i don't even think he knows what to expect when he gets out there for a race.

i don't understand how he ran 3:37 at oxy and can't repeat that - much less get lower then that. he is about to become a father and i could easily see him not sleeping enough, not eating right, and not having his head into running (which would be having his priorities right) but not the best for producing fast times on the track.

Don't know the schedule- But is a Webb training partner in the 5K? Is it possible he's rabbiting as a workout? Then racing the 1500m on another day?

Webb WILL set the AMERICAN RECORD in the 5000 with a time of 12:50. Webb is going to not only commander this race but he will also commander USA track and field.

Agreed, he's been working really hard. His past few races have indicated that this is coming, can't wait to see him pull it off!

bluff/ whether he finishes or not. alan has done things and been places that we can only imagine. this guy is going to the olympics in the 1500 whether you like it or not.
