Did Derrick get gapped that badly on the last lap? Did he just give up once he realized he wasn't going to win?
Moving out creates problems because it means that they do not know when you are going to move or if. Staying right where you are is the most predictable and lowest risk for everyone.

Where was the common sense from the lapped runners?!?!?!? Move to lane 3!!!!!!
Wow Levins just smoked them the last 200.
58.1 the last 400. Derrick had been leading and then on the backstretch he got dropped pretty easily and it didn't look like the pace picked up much.
So with 200 to go it was Levins and Sambu and Levins just crushed him the last 200. I think Levins ran 26 point the last 200 if I looked at the clock correctly.
28:07 Levins
28:09 Sambu
28:17 Derrick
Levins, literally, looked around bewildered with 200m to go. "Really, this is it? I'm in the lead and I'm not even sprinting?" Then, with 150m to go he kicks just for the hell of it, out of habit more than anything. That was ridiculous.
What happened to Derrick?
58.1 last lap for Levins.
But he smoked Sambu in last 150m.
Insane.
At 150 meters to go, Levin looked behind him, flipped a switch, and turned on the afterburners. He always knew that he had the victory. Very impressive kick.
I think Levins was surprised by how easy that was. He was looking around for Derrick with 200 to go, just cruising along.
so who has levins in the 5k now?
Derrick screwed over quite a bit by the heat. The drawback of Palo Alto vs. Arizona/Utah.
Yeah, 10 seconds in the last 300...most of it in the last 200

58.1 last lap for levins, HUGE SPRINT FROM 200 OUT
They went through the 5k in 14:20, that means his 2nd 5k was 13:47!!
14:18 so 14:18/13:49, but after 3km it was generally faster, then the fast last 3-4 laps.
seriously, 14:20, 13:47, huge neg split WOW

Agreed. Girls on my college team would move out when the guys were already out in lane 2 and it ended with words being exchanged more than once.

Heat?????
It's like 74 degrees there right now...
I think Occupy Tardville is my favorite poster now.
Last 200m split anyone?
Moron. Why do some people always act like some strategy or other is going to allow someone to beat another runner with a better PR and better kick?
His last lap (67ish) was slower than the few before it. Don't know if he gave up when Levins and Sambu took off with 300 to go, or if he totally ran out of gas. Probably both

If you know your goal race is going to be in the heat there are things you can do about it.
