Am I the only one who believes it's terribly narcissistic for Jones to think it actually matters if she remains a virgin until marriage or not? She could have sex with someone tomorrow, and I'm pretty sure the world will not spin off its axis as a result.
Have you considered that you might never get married?

It's like eating. You have to eat to survive. That is the point of eating. The fact that you enjoy it ensures that you eat adequately. And the fact that it staves of that feeling of hunger is another reason. You feel hunger so that you will eat. You feel pleasure during sex so that you will continue to have sex.
A method of reproduction exists solely to reproduce.
Whatever feelings or whatever comes from it is simply to ensure that the act gets performed.
That's not how natural selection works. Things don't feel good SO you will do them. You don't feel hungry SO you will eat. Animals that feel hunger when they need food are more likely to survive. People who enjoy reproduction are more likely to propagate.
Read Gould's The Panda's Thumb if you don't understand the difference.
I, umm, don't believe a word of this. I don't believe she's actually a virgin.

Are you being intentionally ignorant? Obviously it's irrelevant once they're married. I don't know why limiting your number of sexual partners is considered a bad thing. It's not something I would ever fault someone for.
I also don't know why people refuse to admit that abstinence is the only 100% effective way to prevent STDs and pregnancy. I agree that there should be discussions about other forms of contraceptives, but to treat abstinence as a taboo is insane.
We don't acknowledge it because it's an incredibly banal point. Yes, the best way to avoid pregnancy is to not have sex.
You know what else is true? The best way to stay safe while skiing is to not go skiing. Does it make sense to bring that up in a discussion of ski safety?
The purpose of sex is enjoyment. Although its evolutionary purpose is reproduction, no one has an obligation to reproduce.
Lolo has the right to do whatever she wants, but I don't respect her any more for saving herself for marriage. A person who waits for marriage isn't any better than someone who doesn't.
Most of these posts must be men and not by one of the millions of women who end up with an unwanted pregnancy every year. Why else would there be a million abortions in the U.S. every year? That firgure doesn't include all the unwanted pregnancies that still result in live births or the millions of STD's transmitted every year. Men don't deal with unwanted pregnancies. They almost always walk away leaving the woman with either a baby, an abortion, or giving up a baby for adoption. She then has to live with the emotional scars from that decision for years if she decides on abortion/adoption or the long term financial responsibility if she keeps the child.
If more people waited until marriage, the country as a whole would benefit. Lolo is wise to understand the long term consequences of sex. Nothing wrong with that.
You must be a real blast to debate with, if harping on some sort of technicality is your method of "proof."Yes, in the evolutionary sense, the purpose of sex is reproduction. However, if you want to play that game, in the evolutionary sense our only purpose is to survive long enough to reproduce, and ensure that our offspring live. Thus, EVERYTHING that you're doing that isn't part of this (like posting on letsrun) is "unnatural" or "not the point."The reality, for anyone with either half a brain or half an open mind, is that we (humans) have vast capabilities, which evolved to some specific purpose, which we can use to accomplish other things, for purposes of our own enjoyment (or a myriad of other purposes). Arguably, strong legs and lung capacity are for running; however, people are smart, and using them for cycling, rock climbing, swimming, or any other activity you enjoy is equally reasonable. Brain power is evolutionarily designed to help us survive in the wild; however, some may use this power to figure out things in the universe (science, physics, math, etc) that are not really relevant to our immediate survival. Again, reasonable. In the end, humans have this mechanism for reproduction which is evolutionarily designed to be enjoyable. With "modern technology," however, it is very easy and very practical for us to use this simply for pleasure, virtually eliminating reproduction from the act.

She clearly hasn't read the "post-nuptial shutoff" thread.
Much respect to Ms Jones.
Now we know why she biffed the final hurdle in Beijing. She couldn't go "all the way".

Something doesn't add up.
What doesn't add up? That she has convictions? You don't have to be a beautiful woman to be able to have sex if you want it. I don't see how appearance relates to conviction to something. No doubt her appearance probably leads to more opportunity, but more chances isn't incompatible with consistent behavior.
Convictions? She used to shop-lift frozen dinners!!!!! Now she takes the moral high road and says she wants to save it for marriage? Seriously folks, sex isn't that big a deal. Get it on and enjoy life.
when girls tell me that i'll run faster if i have sex with them i say yes.
She has a great body. And a very handsom face.
There's some really messed up people on this thread, goddammit.
This could quickly devolve into a discussion of semantics but at the risk of that...
What is meant by "purpose"? Animals have evolved to become sexual creatures (and remember, we all are descendants of asexual organisms), needing sex to "propagate," as you say, but human beings, among other creatures such as dolphins, have evolved to have higher faculties. Reproduction may be the biological reason that sex exists, but humans respond to that in different ways.
Why do gay people have sex if there is no cause for reproduction?
Why do people starve themselves in order to stay thin?
Culture always battles biology, and almost always dominates the response to behavior, evidenced by this thread.
That said, my personal opinion is that it is unfortunate that sexuality is so divisive. Premarital sex should, I think, not be condemned and neither should abstinence. People usually have these tendencies due in large part to their upbringing.
Alright, essay over. I've stopped making sense, if I ever started.
Craig is still a Virgin...
Uh, doesn't Lolo play for the other team?
The religious obsesssion with virginity is just plain comical. I mean, really, this God is a real piece of work. Creates us to look exactly like we evolved like other animals, gives us urges, capacities and desires that hurt nobody, then demands we resist them. Plus all that changing his mind about what is right and wrong. It is God that needs a judgement day, not us.
She said this in the interview for marketing purposes. She is trying to brand herself within a market segment that believes this to be important.
As for whether or not it is true, I'd say, "highly unlikely" unless she is 100% gay. Countless studies have shown the same levels of abstinence among those practicing abstinence as among those who do not i.e. say you are a, "virgin" and, "practice abstinence" means nothing.
There are very few people who actually refrain from sex until marriage. The numbers are shockingly low, so do not kid yourself about what this really is - a marketing ploy.
