I spent part of my college days at a state school and then went to a top 10 business school. I can tell you that there was undoubtedly a difference in the quality of the education I received at the two schools. I'm not saying that all state universities are a joke, but the one I went to certainly was. Brand names have the hype for a reason.

If you read how the rankings are obtained you will realize that Shanghai does not sell newstand copies at train stations in the Northeast U.S.A. and Shanghai does not do they accept advertisements. Shanghai only ranks public research. Understand that certain schools heavily involved in strategic reserach publish only a fraction of their discoveries. Witness Tehran University, Imperial University system in Japan, University of California system, California Institute of Technology, etc. which are often mentioned.
