How often is this run in high school now?
I am newly reacquainted with high school track, and so far in my daughter's season, the first two Saturday meets have had a DMR. I never ran one of these in high school.
'Sup with that?

Anyone? Anyone? Clear Eyes?
2-3 times a season, depending on which invitationals the school goes to. I ran them 1-2 times a season in H.S. back in the early 80's. It's one of my favorite events.
There has. Even a huge increase in "distance carnivals" that are a huge success with often thousands of entries. Very similar to xc everyone runs. These all day events are great, there are so many entries that in a heat of 20 all runners could have a pr within seconds so anyone can win. These often have a DMR at the end. Other invites are having them more often too. You really could schedule invites with these almost every week if you wanted to.
That said the above poster is right. Most teams run one 1-3 times a season. They are fun and gives the distance kids a shot at a relay.
Really depends on where you're at, but as the posters above said, most teams generally have an opportunity to run in one or two during the year if they choose to go to those invitationals. Not a common event, but probably one of the most common not-usually-contested events. If your daughter's team goes to more bigger meets, they'll probably have even more opportunities to see them, because smaller meets don't run them as often (you have to have a competitive enough meet to really make it worth it to add events, like the DMR, SMR, odd relays, 5k or steeple races, etc., unless the theme of the meet is relay events without much individual events)
here in the northeast you can run DMRs regularly throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. The DMR at Penn is pretty prestigious (they only take about 15)and a goal of many HS teams.

In high school we used to go to to relay invititationals every year at least twice and they always had a DMR. Didn't your team ever run the Toledo Whitmer Relays?
I don't think it is run any more or less than it always has been in high school.
In Southern California almost every large HS Invitational has a DMR, including the prestigious Arcadia and Mt. SAC Invitationals. In fact, I'd consider it the most commonly run relay other than the Olympic distances (4x1 and 4x4).
We get to run a maximum of three DMR's per season in eastern KS. South Relays, Blue Valley Relays, and the prestigious KU Relays, if you qualify in one of the two earlier meets.
Distance kids love the DMR.
In Delaware this is only done at invitation relay meets. Which I would imagine is similar in most states.
