Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in "Winter's Bone". It might be worth seeing just for her.
Given that I know little about the books, this was actually my opinion too.

It is completely different then battle royale. Not a diss on battle royale. I love that movie, but for those of us who actually have read the book you would notice how different they are. The only constant is the theme of dystopian society.
I've read both, and really fail to see how people believe this. There are loads of similarities. Sure there are differences, but to say they are 'completely different' is just false.

I haven't read the books, but the commercials look like a similar plot to Battle Royale - people periodically selected against their will to compete against each other in a survival game. Am I correct?
How many times has this plot been done? What other books/movies? Who is the original creator of this plot? Does it go back as far as te Greeks? I would have said Lord of the Flies is the oldest predecessor that I know of, but that plot is a little bit different.

Yes, it does go back to the Greeks. It is the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. It probably goes back before that and has variants in many different cultures, but I'm not a learned enough student of comparative mythology to know about them.
Reminds me of the 70's movie Logan's Run]Twitched wrote:

An even better story concerning a future in which children "fight" to the death in order to secure wealth and fame is The Long Walk by Stephen King. Great book for distance runners and a quick read
Has anyone seen it yet? I heard the movie should of been called "The Hunger Lames".

Isn't this where if you stop walking you die
I thought The Long Walk was what Judges take into the Cursed Earth when they resign their Judge status.
I AM THE LAW
It has an 8.2 over on IMBD, which would put in the Top 250.

Not surprisingly women like it better than men.
Men over 45 hate it the most.
Females under 18 like it the most.
87% over on Rotten Tomatoes.
So, seems like its a good flick but not the best movie ever like some will make it out to be.

The creator of The Walking Dead has the rights to make a The Long Walk movie

Just read the description of the book's plot. The event sounds disturbingly similar to a 100 mile "death-march" ultra I did once.
I'll have to check it out.
reminds me of how we used to select our 4x4 team in high school; similar themes.
The books themselves were meant to appeal to 20 -25 year olds, however the idea that they're for teenagers took on a life of it's own. The movie is probably catered to teenagers as a seemingly dominant population of the book's readers are teenagers.
Just saw the movie, and it was pretty good but maybe hard to catch all the symbolism without having read the books. Definitely entertaining for all ages/either sex, but primarily geared for teenage girls.
Read the Hunger Games trilogy and Battle Royale and definitely think Battle Royale was better. It has the same amount of anti-totalitarian government sentiments as Hunger Games, but condensed into one book. And luckily the romance part was summed up in a few chapters rather than 2.5 books like in the Hunger Games. The fights were more epic and brutal as well in Battle Royale. Pretty much all-around better than the hunger games, I guess that's what you get when you have a male protagonist rather than a female one.
The Elric saga, perfect for the big screen. The Albino Prince and his vampiric runesword Stormbringer. Perfect!

They had to tone down the violence in the Hunger Games because they needed to make the film a 12 rating rather than a 15 (don't know the US equivalents). I read somewhere that they thought it was disappointing that they had to do it, but the under 15 market is huge and they couldn't afford to alienate them.
AVOID THIS MOVIE.
I went willingly to see it with my wife, who has read the books and everything. I had no preconceptions about the movie, in fact I didn't know anything about it. I was open minded.
It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.
The characters are the ultimate cliches. The plot is completely predictable. There are lines of dialogue /narration included in the movie to point out the most obvious things, but to me it seemed just insulting to the viewer. The script has to be the corniest piece of trite shite ever written.
I was appalled at how bad this movie was.
