This is rubbish. You´ve just didn´t get your training right. I agree that programs from the book "Run to the top" shouldn´t be used literally, what I remember there was too big changes in training types after the base season (hill work-pre competition-competition period or so) in my opinion, but to say Lydiard base training garbage I don´t agree at all.
But I would keep the program more similar with the base phase throughout the year.
