In NYC, no boys teams can be added at new high schools:
At Metropolitan High School in Queens, there are three official sports teams for girls, parents say. If you're a boy, you're out of luck: There are none.
The Public Schools Athletic League approved 100 new girls' sports teams citywide for the current school year—clearly grounds for cheering (and we're not talking cheerleading; that isn't a PSAL-recognized sport).
But few, if any, new boys sports teams got off the ground.
The reason?
For existing schools with wide sports offerings, the PSAL's strategy doesn't really pose a problem. But for new high schools, like Metropolitan High School, it does.
According to Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the city's Department of Education, a continuing federal probe into its high-school sports programs has left the PSAL focusing on adding girls teams.
