Obviously the real reason Rupp didn't run the Trials is because he wants to debut at a major marathon and earn a huge paycheck.
Bingo! Rupp could have run the trials. No one has ever said he couldn't. The question is what would the point have been?
Rupp is already doing marathon or marathon-like training so he's building up the strength in training whether he actually ran the trials.
Making the team in the marathon would have been pointless because Rupp's goal is to try to medal in the 5k and/or 10k at the Olympics, and he would probably have given up his spot on the team for the marathon anyway if he had made the top 3.
The downside of debuting at the trials is that it probably reduces the appearance fee he could get from a debut at a major marathon, especially if he medals in the 5k or 10k, which is his goal.
When you take the heightened risk of injury from running the trials and possibly giving up money down the road with no corresponding benefit, there was no reason for Rupp to run.
None of this applies to Ritz. His goal was to be on the marathon team. He missed is goal and is now looking to make the team at a shorter distance. Running cross helps him with that goal.
