I'm around 60 and have been following the sport since I was about 15. There are 2 American distance runners I have seen run that stand head and shoulders above all others in terms of sheer talent: Decker and Ryun.
Both of them were truly world class while still teenagers and I have no doubt that in their primes they could compete with the best in the world in any era.
Don't forget the Grayman....and NOBODY can touch JJK.
My favorite Little Mary Decker Slaney picture:

Today, she would kick Caster Semenya in the nuts!
A real "little" Mary photo from Jan '74 (age 15) an indoor meet in Europe.
A month later, on home turf, she would run the 2:01.8(c) 800m on an 11-lap track that stands (by a wide margin) as the U.S. girls HS record. IMHO, the greatest youth mark on the books.

One of the greatest talents in American distance running History. However, she is a convicted drug cheat who will forever be associated with those whose company she kept. Systematic use of PED's from an early point in her career. Hard to give any creedence to those marks. USATF did a huge disservice to the sport by putting her in the Hall Of Fame
Ditto.
Slaney ranks right up there with anyone for how smooth her form was - a pleasure to watch.
It's kind of ironic the next Mary Slaney (Decker) is also a Mary, Mary Cain. Identical running form, extremely smooth and has 55-400 speed. If she can stay healthy she'll be breaking that US HSR anytime now. She went 4:17.84 for the seventh fastest 1500 ever run by a high school girl.. and she was a freshman, she's even ran a 9:28 3000. Can't wait for this girl to start unleashing some sick times. I think she'll be 2:01-4:13 this year.
Mary Cain and Mary Slaney's form "identical"? Saturday night at the crack pipe much?

Anyone remember the names of Mary's sisters? Didn't she have a brother called Johnny? Did they run?
She was both - insanely talented, and a drug cheat. I can't find it now, but I recall reading an article about her that said she'd run 23.xx for 200 m when she was in high school. Can anyone confirm or disprove this?
Anyway, I'm as cynical as they come about doping in sport, but, I'd be pretty surprised if she was doping before she got to Eugene. Once in a century talent.

Zola Budd ran sub 4 as a teen
Zola Budd didn't run sub 4 on an 11 lap to the mile indoor track. Slaney was talented beyond anyone else and it is very unfortunate that she probably was on the doping program from the early 1980s. Nevertheless, by whatever means, she destroyed the Eastern Europeans proven to be doping at that time in the 1983 World Championships, where she doubled and front-ran all but a very short amount of the 1500m/3k. She then proved her quality again in subsequent races against them AND Budd after the Olympics. She was very unlucky to be too young to run in 1972, surgery/compartment syndrome in 1976, boycott in 1980, and then tripped in 1984. I wonder if all that disappointment played any role in the alleged cheating.
Anyone know if Mary Slaney had brothers and sisters and if they also ran?

EX: She is also the only woman to hold both the indoor and outdoor Mile world records.
Thanks, although your Bring Back the Mile biog says she was the first woman to run a sub-4:20 mile in July 1982 but didn't she clock 4:17.6 in Houston in the indoor season of 1980?

Correct, but that track was oversized, and thus, times not considered "official"/record quality.
Her bio has been updated:
