do yourself a favor and get a pair of mambas. greatest spike on the face of the earth
if you have ever read any other posts on the difference between the matumbos and victories, you could probably know the answer without having to post it again. if i were you, i would get the victories, a kid on my team did the same events last year and used vics, but it all depends on what your foot is like, and which one feels more comfortable for you to use
if these are your only two options then get the victories as theyre the more aggressive of the two, unless youre opposed to an aggressive spiek like the vicotries (and they will get you on your toes). the victories are designed for 800m and mile as the main function for the shoe so it makes sense to use them over a 10k shoe (that was its main design scheme, obviously usable for shorter races).
the only reason i'd think of getting the matumbos instead is if you'd be racing 2 mile primarily, and thatd be more for a comfort thing. even then though victories are still just as viable as the matumbos at 2 miles (thats in their event description). if it means anything, bekele uses victories for even the 10k.
matumbos are a more relaxed spike suited more for longer distances due to the relaxed attributes. not really going to get you on your toes but are comfortable and offer a bit more protection. the spikes also tend to be "felt" pretty easily due to the placement and spie type, so it'd be best to use either a 1/8th inch spike, maybe christmas tree or even no spikes. the arch in the middle can be a little annoying too.
the victories are much more aggressive but the plate feels more comfortable imho and you cant "feel" the spikes like you can in the matumbos. very responsive as well but tend to thrash your legs up more easily than the matumbos. you also tend to have sore calves after using them for extended periods of time gut i guess thats the tradeoff.
if you can have another choice, go with the mambas like a previous poster said as they are pretty much an inbetween of the victories and matumbos; resposnive and have some good agression yet also offer good protection and comfort. they'd fit your needs perfectly.
How agressive are the Mamba's compared to the victories?
I ran XC through high school and only ran one half season of track (I played baseball all 4 years) and I just used my heavy rubber XC spikes for track.
Anyways, I have been running since but have just now gotten the chance to run track again since I transferred schools. I am a sub-2:00 800 runner if that makes a difference for what spike I get, although I want to focus on the 1500.
Anyways, my point is, I have never ran, or have even tried on an aggressive spike, and I am most likely going to have to order track spikes without trying them on.
Even though the victories are agressive, does it make it awkward, let's say, if you land midfoot. It just looks like there would be a pressure spot between where the spike plate begins.
