Even those of us who are "in the real world with a real job" only spend a portion of our lives at said job. We're talking about things that men should never wear, not things that men should not wear to work. When I take my dog out in the morning, work out, work around the house on a Saturday, go to bed, etc, I wear different clothes than I would wear to my "real job."

Of course you wouldn't wear white socks to work. But you probably wear them when you're running. Of course I wouldn't wear a poorly fitting t-shirt to work. But I might wear one to bed. I wouldn't wear a sweatshirt to work. But I'd wear one while I'm having my coffee at home on a Saturday morning. Obviously no one is going to show up to the office in flip flops, but are you really such a prick that you'd fault someone for wearing them to go out in their own front yard to get the paper?

You are obviously a huge douche who doesn't realize that not everyone lives where you live or does the exact same activities you do. Styles are different throughout the country across different demographics. There are lots of places where flip flops are the norm, you're telling me that if you live in hawaii, southern california, or the florida keys its not acceptable to wear them unless your going to the beach. I got news buddy you will be the only one in penny loafers or what ever douche shoe you think is cool. And I sorry but running shoes are comfortable and great for walking around in. If you're just going around doing errands what is wrong with wearing them? Bulky jackets? Seriously if you live some where cold and you don't own a down jacket you are an idiot. They compress down to nothing for travel, they weigh nothing and the keep you ridiculously warm which is kinda of the point of a jacket. The rest of us are all super glad that you have some loser job where you wear a crappy cheap suit every day and suck off all the middle manager losers above to get ahead but if you can just keep your want to be GQ style out of the running boards that would be great.

I work at a mid-size manufacturing sub-contractor. People regularly wear flip flops, sweatshirts, baseball hats, and so on to work. Where I am people tend to care more about the quality of your work than the quality of your pants. Not every industry is as image-obsessed as you seem to think.

This is ridiculous. Not caring about the clothes you wear is a sign of immaturity, not homosexuality. (Not to mention the fact that many of the worst-dressed men I know are gay.)

Of course that doesn't mean one needs to be a dandy or a fashion-whore, but it's indisputable that people judge you by your appearance. A rudimentary knowledge of clothing at least allows you to have some control over how you are judged. You may say you don't care at all about how you are judged. I don't believe anyone who says this. It's certainly possible to try too hard to fit in, to have no sense of self, but at the same time, humans are social animals, and fitting in to some degree is important to us.

I wore team gear in college because I liked people to know I was a varsity athlete. Now that I have a career, I dress very differently, even outside of work. There are a few reasons for this. For one, I now have the money to eat and shop at a different level of establishment, and I'm treated far better when I dress a bit more formally. I also now socialize with people from my industry, and even if they are not presently colleagues, it's certainly prudent to dress like I'm part of the club. This doesn't mean that I wear ascots and velvet slippers all over town. It does mean that I don't wear sweatshirts outside of the house.

As far as the specific suggestions:

- Pleats may look a little old-fashioned, but they're fine as long as the trousers fit you well.

- Rubber-soled shoes with suits are just awful. I suppose the only exception might be suede bucks with a seersucker suit, but that's a bit over-the-top for me.

Lighten up, Francis. You know as well as I that the overall message conveyed here by the OP (who is not me) is "things that men should never wear IN PUBLIC." If you want to look silly at home when lounging around, that's fine, I sometimes wear silly ill-fitting things when sitting around watching tv or whatever. But the point is, a lot of that stuff on that list (cargo shorts, black suits [well, it was added to the list later], etc) you should not even own in the first place.

Anyway, I figured common sense and reading comprehension would prevail, but you've shown that things realllllly need to be S-P-E-L-L-E-D out for the poorly dressed, intellectually insufficient Letsrun crowd.
