I recently walked on to a division 3 college and the coach is not having me do any speed work at all. Although I trained 55 miles a week over the summer, the coach says he wants me to be on his program for a few months before i start doing speed work or racing. My question is will I start losing fitness by doing no speed work? Even during my summer base phase i did a fartlek once a week. Now I do 60 to 65 miles a week all at 6:50 pace, no variation except a couple 100 meter strides 3 days a week.
