13:00 5k is 8:19 3200 pace. He would have had to become a completely different runner in less than a year to even come close to breaking 13

Fernandez 2011/2012 a plan: part of winning team at NCAA cross country;
new pr in 1500/mile and top three at ncaa 1500 outdoors; healthy and ready for a new pr in the 1500 at 2012 olympic trials. And of course: Nike sponsorship.

He won't PR in anything, but he'll definitely get the Nike Sponsorship.

He did a double in high school of 4:00 and 8:38. He should have been a lock to run 13:00 for 5000 in a year.
Fans talking this crazy stuff, GF appearing to believe it, are why dude's career has become continous DNSs/DNFs. I knew when he skipped Indoor NCAAs for World Jr XC that he was doomed.
I meant a year from now, 5 years from graduating high school I would have hoped he would have been close to 13:00. I think Salazar went from 14:04 to 13:11 in 6 years. Fernandez had to have been capable of 13:45 in high school. And why should he have been doomed for skipping NCAA Indoors? World Cross is a great trip with better competition. And you really can't do both.

As Coach Ralph Tate would tell you: "you can't wear German Fernandez's jockey strap."
The Magician is back, the Magician is back!!!
More news coming in. He says he is in great shape and will have a season of 9 or 10 races gearing up for his finale of the olympics in 2012. Will Arnett has confirmed this on Twitter.
Classic, bringing Webb in too.
Anyone who thinks gf did what he was expected to is just lying to themselves. Imagine if lukas v had Germans career, obviously people just expect a hs Nat record holder to do better.
That being said gf has done well and it is hard as a young boy going up against 25 yr old foreigners, obviously we don't expect our pros to beat 25 year old kenyans each time out

Fernandez should have gone to Nike/Oregon and been treated differently because he is a rarity like Webb and Rupp. A collegiate cross country season is so unimportant. Yet as a scholarship athlete he has that pressure to be at his best every race. He should just say "Fuk it" and get a several months of injury free training and develop. Injuries are a bitch. Plenty of the greatest talents seem to be the most injury prone.
He did a double in high school of 4:00 and 8:38. He should have been a lock to run 13:00 for 5000 in a year. Just has to get the momentum back. It will come if he stays cool and stays with it.

Why is it that when a runner is plagued by injuries, we assume that it is a personal failing? Sure, Webb has been a bit of a basket case with coaching, but German has stayed put, hasn't made excuses and has just had injuries like anyone else could have had. Grow up people. Runners get hurt. Jenny Simpson got hurt and came back to get a gold at Worlds. Meb got hurt and came back to win the New York Marathon. Sh-- happens. German is making a comeback. He ran well over the weekend. If he stays healthy, it could be a great year for him.

You mean THIS field with no competition? These four guys all ran in between 3:35.1 to 3:37.9 that season. Really weak for a college field I suppose (?).
