i've gone like 2 days eating as minimally as possible (a granola bar or 2) several times before in my life, i've found that it gets my weight down about 5 pounds or so, then i'm able to keep it down after returning to regular eating
You can't lose 5 pounds in 2 days -- that's just water and an empty intestine, not a loss of fat or other change in body composition. I guess if you run 60 miles each day and restrict your eating you might get there.
Personally I think near-fasting (for short periods, not more than 2 days) can help focus your attention on what you're eating. But it is not itself a way to lose weight.
CCCC:
Pay attention to what Orville Atkins said--his name has nothing to do with Dr. Atkins diet. He's even older than me, and had several good finishes at Boston back in the 60's. See this thread

Also, if Coach Igloi said it, it must be right. He was one of the best in his day--the man with over a million different interval workouts if I recall correctly.
If you want to end your running career, and possibly your life, you should go with Atkins.
Do NOT use the Atkins diet. Listen to Orville about doing more training and eating a healthy blend of nutritional items. If your going to cut out anything, cut out simple sugars and saturated fat. Restricting complex carbs, especially vegetables and fruits is a horrible idea, not just for runners, for anyone. Tinman
several years ago, carbohydrate depletion was the thing to do prior to carbo loading before a marathon. the rationale behind was that when you start eating carbs again, your body stores even more glycogen because it was being deprived. i tried it for 3 days prior to carbo loading while i was tapering for a marthon and day 1 was not bad. day 2, i felt like i had never started tapering and by day 3, i felt like i was running in a vat of corn syrup. but when i started carb loading, running felt really good again and ran a pretty good marathon.
When i heard of atkins, this is exactly what came to mind. there is no way in hell i would try to do any sort of exercise and not eat carbs.
atkins is fine for people who want to sit on their butts all day and not raise their heartrate. but trying to run without carbs would be like trying to make your car go without any gas in the tank.
Curvacious, is that another word for fat? 5'4" and 129, yikes, you shouldn't have any problem dropping to around 115, if you eat healthy and exercise.
You have two choices.
1. Go on the Atkins, loose energy resulting in a cutback of miles.
2. Eat a healthy diet, run more miles.
You can reach your weight goals with both methods, but the first one will leave you in worse shape then when you started. Go with the second option.
Atkins is horrible.
Calcium is also a major factor in muscle contraction (during the relaxing). Not enough, you get (later) loss of skletal bone density, but long before that you will be running like crap because of stiff muscles and possible anemia due to ongoing microtraumatic tears.
Think smaller portions! And do most of this thinking during the non-racing season.
If you dont like cheese aka dairy and have a history of stress fractures, making me think that there are issues with calcium, I cant stress how much soy based products have helped me personally maintain strong bones and avoiding dairy-stomach-of-death. SOY. Screw the skim milk, go for some vanilla Silk.

Fuck off, asshole.
The best way to loose any extria mass that you might have is just to eat a healthy diet. Keep this in mind however, 129 at 5'4'' is not all that much. In fact I would bet that you don't have anything that you need to loose. Think about it this way M.Motola is stated to be 5'3'' and 130. Now she for her size has more weaight then most of the people that she is running with. But she also has a kick that when she let it rip, no-one can run with. There was a runner by the name of Peter Snell, he was a HUGE! man. 5'10' 170! Not on ounce of fat on the guym when he was a young runner. His coach tells of the story that must other coaches sead he was to big to be a runner. But his coach trained hem just as he did the rest of his runners. Getting hem to the point where he could run a full Marthon in 2:40 when the world rec was only around 2:20! And he was an 800m guy to boot. Well even at peak fitness while running 140 miles a week, he was around 170 lbs. Now his coach and this is a quite sead ''Peter Snell was a big man, and becous of this a lot of othere coaches sead he was to big to be a runner. But I new better, He was a big powerfull man and when he let his kick loose there was no one who could stick with hem. He was just to strong''. Let the training determon where your weight falls and rember that there have been a lot of great runners who where strong. As your training starts getting harder and longer you will start to burn more Kcals thoughout the day. And the cool thing about running is that your level of hunger is not directly related to the amount of kcals you burn running. So you will burn more, eat the same and loose mass. If you need to if not then you are going to just get stronger and stay healthy.
Befor you try the Atkens thing try this, eat a small dinner. Then about 120 min later. Run for about 60min then don't eat for the rest of the night. Now frist thing the next morning, for brakefast eat a stick yes a stick of butter. This will give you a ton of kcals, let it digest and then go for a run and see how you feel. Your body is going to be running on fat at this point. And you should get a pritty good idea for the way your going to feel training on the Atkens plain.
Definetely dont' try this:
