also, petroleum is used to make plastics and polymers and plays some role in just about every aspect of our lives in america. perhaps we should make a point of just consuming less oil. how about a NO DRIVING day? when nobody drives to work.

I agree with PVC. The oil companies, although they're rich, aren't raising prices completely artificially. Stupid-ass consumers driving SUVs and pickups are the real culprits. If people would not DRIVE for a day, it'd be a whole lot better for everyone involved, minus the oil companies.

seriously this is not going to do anything. Even if everyone didn't buy gas on April 19th what would that accomplish? It would just cause long lines the before and after the 19th.

I received this like 4 or 5 times and think it has to be the stupidest email I ever received. The reason that it is dumb is everyone will run out and get gas either Tuesday or Thursday so in reality the oil companies will lose nothing. If people took a month to ride bikes, use public transportation, walk, and car pool then it would hit them in the pocket books. But to say - no gas on Wednesday, but Thursday go back and buy all you need...that makes not sense.

If you usually sell 100 units of gas - in two days you sell 200 units.

If one day you sell 0 (Wednesday) and then 200 the next day - guess what you still sell 200!

Maybe this is what people need to help them start realizing that they need to try something different. Sure 1 day won't make any difference in the long run, but you have to remember, people like their SUV's and Starbucks, they don't want to be troubled too much. FUCK IT ...MAYBE WE NEED A NATIONAL GET OFF OF YOUR ASS AND STAND UP FOR YOURSELF DAY

First semester college economics teaches this little protest won't do diddly. Besides, when one of these boycotts even takes hold for a short period of time, who gets hurt? The oil companies? Nope. Eventually folks will fill up again. It's the poor schlub who gets $5.15/hr. to run the pumps and the cash register who gets laid off. Now all you have done is hurt the little man.

Oil companies buy crude on the open market as a commodity. Those futures contracts are dictated by the price brokers in the pits are willing to pay. It's the free market at its purest. That price plus transportation, refining, and marketing costs are passed on to the consumer. Then guess what happens? Your state probably imposes a hefty tax on each gallon of gasoline you buy! In Oregon, that amounts to $0.24 a gallon. By the time you pay, the gas station owner and the oil company each only realize about a dime of profit on each gallon sold. The margins are horrible.

If Americans were truly interested in lessening our dependence on foreign oil, they would lobby for more fuel efficient vehicles, switch to bio-diesel, hydrogen, and hybrid technologies, and begin to utilize mass transit and human powered alternatives.

If government were serious, they would mandate a switch to the new technologies by a set date. This would be more palatable to the oil companies if they were granted or incentivized (tax credits for new technology) to handle the emerging bio-diesel and hydrogen concessions. If ExxonMobil, Chevron Texaco, BP, etc. were granted exclusive rights to bio diesel and hydrogen stations for a period of ten years, they would change over and phase out fossil fuels. Imagine the economic boom created by a whole nation of people buying new rigs or converting their existing cars to the new fuels.

If your local Exxon has already purchased X amount of gasoline and people one day decide, "hey I'm not going to buy anymore gas" the one being screwed here is not the big overseas oil producers who are jacking up prices but your local Exxon. A one day boycott is about as close to pointless as can be (see above 0+200=100+100). Why not a one day protest on Washington to sack a large oil producing area and claim it and its resources for OUR use?
