Long story short, I had a tibial stress fracture my sophomore year in high school. I was running ~35mpw in Asics Gel Kayano 15's. I did research, and decided to try minimalism. I chose to learn to midfoot run using Newtons. (FYI-I'm a severe overpronator with foot structural problems.) The minimalism helped strengthen my feet and legs, but I started having some serious problems with my hips. -Keep in mind, I was a junior/senior girl in high school. Puberty sucks.- Anyway, I fixed the hip problems, and continued on with minimalism. I ran in Nike Lunaracers and Nike Frees for my entire senior year. However, I ran very low mileage (20mpw)...which most likely helped me avoid any major injuries.
Now, I am a freshman in college, and I was having a pretty successful season...but then I developed a foot injury, which the trainer believes to be tendonitis (possibly peroneal, but she also thinks it could be some slight plantar fasciitis.) I had stepped up my mileage over the course of the summer very gradually, *I had been wearing Nike Free Run 2's*, and had no problems until the day of my first race, when I started having foot pain. At first I thought I just strained something from running in my spikes, but it's been over 2 weeks and this pain hasn't subsided even with naproxen and lots of rehab.
Here's the issue-My coach and trainer now are buying me new shoes...Asics 1160's or Asics 2160's. These are motion-control shoes for severe overpronators. I'm now concerned that I will have to start heel-striking again, my form will fall apart, my foot strength will be completely gone, and I'll ultimately get another stress fracture. I worked really hard on my form for 2 years, and it's actually really smooth. My times have improved, and I feel a lot stronger. I don't want to lose everything I strived to improve upon.
Should I stick with the Free's/Lunaracers? I don't even think my coach will let me run in anything without arch support in them now...
Thoughts?
