currently run in the kinvaras on roads but am moving soon to mostly trail running, and they are getting ripped up
any opinions on a good (preferably minimalistic) shoe for trails?

If you like the Kinvara, try the Saucony Peregrine. The fit is similar although it's a bit heavier. It has good traction and reasonable protection if your trails have a lot of roots and rocks.
I use brooks ASR 8 because I am over pronation, my wife is a neutral runner, she wears Cascadia 6.
:P Good luck!
As a neutral runner, she also told me "Asics attack 6 or 7" are light weight, good for trial running.
Sorry, for my poor English.
Inov-8's
I wear the Cascadia as a hiking shoe and it's very comfortable. It's not very "minimal" however. The Adrenaline ASR is definitely not minimal but it's also comfortable shoe if you think you need a support shoe. Both would be a lot of shoe compared to the Kinvara.
The New Balance 101 is a good fast minimal trail shoe but still has a plate in teh front for protection against rocks.
My trainer is the Asics 1160 and I used to run in them on trails as well as on the road. I recently got New Balance Trail Minimi (MT10), and enjoy them quite a bit. You can't run on the road with them. I've built up so that I got in about 75 minutes on the nice surface of the Rockies (NY) and have had no trouble on shorter, rockier courses. People have said good things about them running cross at Van Cortlandt, although I've yet to try them in lieu of spikes.
The heel-to-toe drop is 4mm (vs. 10 for the Asics). NB is coming out with a zero drop in 2012.
I've got the Merrell Tough GLove for wearing around. It's pretty minimal. The Trail Glove is the same but with a different ventilated upper. Merrell's got several versions of bascically the same shoe with different uppers.
Inov8 as already mentioned, they do a whole range of minimal off-road shoes, the Bare-Grip 200 is an interesting one
