Watched some pretty good running videos today.
First I watched the Bowerman Track Club's recent intrasquad meet, where all kinds of 5K records were broken, first by the women and then by the men.
For the women, Shelby Houlihan broke the American record by several seconds by running 14:23. Right behind her in 12:46 was Karissa Schweizer, also under the American record.
Then in the men's 5K, Mo Ahmed ran 12:47: just unbelievable. Lopez Lomong finished well back in 12:58, which was his first time under 13:00, not bad for 35 years old.

Then in a comment or interview or something, I heard about Karissa Schweizer's spectacular breakout race at the 2016 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships. So I had to watch that.
Before the NCAA Championships, she was totally unheralded and nobody even mentioned her as a potential factor in the race. Then in the race, she is in 5th place with about 200 yards to go, the leaders well ahead of her, and she just turns it on. She looked like a thoroughbred and made the other girls look like carthorses, as she sprinted past all of them and won easily. Somehow it wasn't even close, although she had been fairly far back with 200 yards to go. How does that happen in a race at such high level?
