KCGeezer,
Here is something you can remind Coach Renshaw about:
http://ustfccca.org/assets/record-book/njcaa-outdoor-track/njcaa-otf-champs-1982.pdf
Brian(6th) finished four seconds behind Arturo Barrios (4th) in the 5,000 meters as the 1982 NJCAA Meet. Barrios would later set the World Record in the 10,000 meters.

Good Old Friends,
2nd 50 mpw in a row. It's so damn difficult for me to do this volume. I'm working harder to slow it down to avoid stiffness city 4 or 5 out of 7 days a week.
Bought a scale the other day. Very motivating. Very alarming first check-in 161lbs !!!!!!

Kansas junior colleges fascinate me. So much talent but so little discipline!
Jason Sudeikis was a terrible student and all he wanted to do was play basketball, so one of the jucos gave him a scholarship ... and he still flunked out! Then he discovered comedy ...
KCgeezer,
At the time I was coaching there were probably close to a dozen Kansas jucos that sponsored track and cross country. You were limited largely to in-state books, tuition and fees. So most of the kids were in-state but used academic grants, work-study and financial aid to supplement. We had some great rivalries. Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence (think Billy Mills) had some great cross country teams. We would go up there for their invitational and their athletes would race in war paint. Boy they would get after it.

My very distant connection to your post... I beat the 2nd place finisher in that 5000 in a local 4 mile race the week after he won the IN State XC Champs in 1979. I won in 19:23 and he was a ways back. I was a year older and he was still in HS but it was a big deal for me at the time!
I barely eek'd out a 50 mile week. Struggled a bit but ran all 7 days and hit all three workouts. Failed to get my workout in on Thursday because I was feeling pretty beat up so I did it Friday. Salvaged my week with pretty good back-to-back days on Fri & Sat. 4x threshold mile on Fri; Solid 11 on Sat. Still averaging 53 mpw this year. Trying to up that a bit but I feel myself really struggling with fatigue and motivation at times. Maybe I'll do better with the weather finally warming up.
Nice run CM!
Agree KP... Its always nice to see an acceptable weight on the scale when I'm feeling really fat. Like today, I can't believe I was 166.6!
Have a good week,
Dave
Dave,
That is a fast four miler. I don’t recall that specific athlete but Ron Gunn had some great teams at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac. He had a cross country course built on campus.

A long time client of mine, who went to Bloomington South, was 14th in that 1979 IN State XC Champs and won it as a senior in 1981.

Most of the trails are still there. About a half hour drive from me.
I ran for SMC in 1978 and again in 1980. We won the JUCO National Champs in 78 but I didn't make the top 10 travel squad. The team was loaded...
Dave
Hey KP,
Great you are on a roll - Keep 'em going! Consistency is key, but don't overdo it.
If you are concerned about weight, you probably know the best way to get to where you want to be sanely is just do the work and eat right. It will come off naturally in due time and some 'fat' will be replaced by muscle gain.
You will know your 'right' weight when you get there.
Crazy as it sounds, I use the scale only to see how much liquid to put back in after a long run and make sure I don't get too light. Pretty much have been at this weight since 1975 (134-137)obviously some genetic thing going on. Somehow I too managed 52 mpw myself (my log weeks end on Sunday) after racing a 5k cold yesterday.
Keep your health liquid intake up!
Dave,
I was cross country coack at New Mexico Junior College in 1977 and 1978. We were 7th and 3rd at NJCAA those years. If I recall correctly you may have been on the SMC teams with Kevin Higdon the son of masters great Hal Higdon.

Yep, thats the team. Still friends with KH today.
I think I ran 25:50 that year but it wasn't enough to make the top 10 on the team! Pretty sure I can beat them all now though... :>)
Dave
Dave,
Funny how that works. I was an officer in the NJCAA Coaches’ Association and was editor of the “Hill ‘N Dale” NJCAA Cross Country Newsletter. I would type out all the cross country results and mail them out each week during the season, so probably typed your name out more than once. Hey I would have scholarshipped you! We ran the Marathon Championship in 1981. Wife and I drove from Kansas to Dowagiac and met the team who flew or drove in. Nice town, scenic.

Same here. I ran 4th, and sometimes 5th on my HS team and every one of them has had serious orthopedic or heart issues and can no longer run at all. It’s like, jeez, are we just lucky or what? I know I spent so much time injured I have fewer miles on my legs than most people from the 70’s.
I ran 100+ miles a week 1970-1976, then pretty much jogged for exercise up until 2002. Then increasingly got into the masters thing, but even then faded in and out based on enthusiasm. Joints and heart are OK, lymph nodes questionable.

I did big miles in the summers of 77, 78 and 79. Every time I tried to run in the 80’s and 90’s I got hurt. Rather than push though I just quit….again and again. Our fastest guy was 3 years back, set all the records. He had toe cancer? Weird. He was in the military and wonders if he was exposed to carcinogenic chemicals. Before chlordane was banned I used it….a lot. Were all of us old guys exposed massive amounts of horrible crap or what? Asbestos brakes….the list goes on...
Makes you wonder for sure. One of the best M65-69 year olds in Idaho just had a pace maker installed and he is done with competition. Lost one college teammate to cancer and several others hit with cancer bouts of various types, others with heart disease. I never used Round Up however I have removed lead based paint, not professionally but as a Saturday warrior. One would like to think a healthy lifestyle would otherwise build some defense against disease, but who knows? The diagnostic tools are better, which has shown my disease is far more complicated than originally thought. Sill there are no markers that say who will get the disease but co-morbidities seem to predict trouble ahead.

I’m with you too, even though I have my moments of weakness when I let the ‘fake news’ get to me. I should know better and will endeavor to ignore the noise.
St. Patty’s Day 5k result: 23:45, good enough for 2nd 65-69. Erin go bragh!
The “turn the other cheek” method is admirable. But when the unwanted behavior continues, I believe the aggressor must be confronted. A bully will continue to insult, demean, and blame unless you stand up to him. I will not apologize for confronting those who repeatedly treat others with a lack of respect. No one here is better than any other poster. We are all equals.
Thanks for your continued respect and efforts with this thread, lucKY2b. Great race, AK-67.

I'll also add that I never use pain medications or anti-inflammatories in order to run. Like many runners, I suppose I've developed a reasonable tolerance for low levels of pain and I don't mind running with something that's a bit ouchy. When the pain exceeds a low level, I quit running. I feel pain is nature's way of telling me to cut it out. I realize there may come a time when I'll have different ideas, but for now that's what I do.
I have the same take on NSAID. It alleviates pain, but does not do anything for the underlying cause. If the pain is mild enough, I will run through it. If not, it's better not to run. Here is a study on the issue. It's six years old, but I couldn't find anything more recent.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22744434My week.
M: off.
T-SA: 7 miles.
SU: 14.3 miles. (8:50 for the first mile, 7:32 for the last mile.)
So I did a little bit longer run, and finished a little faster. So I consider this as progress. Now I take a cut back week, and get one more cycle of build up before tapering for a half marathon.
