This is an excellent article and fairly well written, although I've never heard of the author before. He tries to be as objective as possible, which is difficult when assessing a topic such as "worst 5 fully funded division I track teams." I applaud his effort and agree that controversy ultimately does help our niche sport. Living and coaching in Iowa, I can attest that the lack of a competitive team at Drake is border line insulting. The Drake Relays/State meet are held there every year and bring in a multitude of great athletes. Even some of the "above average" kids could help Drake's team. The only thing he didn't really discuss, in terms of Drake at least, is that it's a difficult school to gain admission to academically. Which will always hurt recruiting. Besides that, it's 50K+ per year.....so if you don't get the "full ride" you're gonna be paying. High academic standards plus high tuition usually add up to mediocre sports programs.
