The Olympic marathon is less than 4 months away and Paula Radcliffe is back training after her secret emergency hernia surgery. One of the most glamourous event to win in the Olympics is the marathon in which Paula will be a favorite; however, she will have serious challengers in the quest for the gold medal. Who do you think stands the best chance to deny Paula the gold medal in the Olympic Marathon and why could that athlete/if anyone hand Paula her first defeat in the marathon.?

Right now on times it looks unlikely, but there are 101 other factors to consider on the day, number 1 being the weather. This may be a better race than you imagine......although i hope she wins by 10 mins of course.

Yes, there will be someone to battle Radcliffe (GBR) in the marathon and it is herself. My biggest concern is that now she will fear getting injured again and will not train to her utmost potential and perhaps enter the race slightly undertrained, but that may be best for her because an undertrained Paula Radcliffe can still win marathon gold.
However, I fear that the 2004 Olympics will be a re-run of the 2003 World Championships and I see a DNS by her name in either the Marathon or the 10,000m.
That is just my professional opinion.
I think that girl is crazy enough to double. She wants to keep the option open, as in be registered in both events.
If she feels good, she may do the 10,000m. There is no pressure she gets 12th, 3rd great for Britain, or she wins.

The heat does strange things looks at Rop today. Quite aggressive mid way and paid huge. I still think on a 45 degree day it was his to win.

Are Cherigat and Cheboror truly 2 and 3 minutes faster than Lel on a 45 degree day? I seriously doubt.

The three biggest threats to Radcliffe are the Japanese women, Naoko Sakamoto, Reiko Tosa and Mizuki Noguchi.
The Athens race is not going to be like London or Chicago. It is going to be an insane, strategic affair.
Keep in mind that a Japanese woman, Hiromi Suzuki, won the 1997 Worlds on the same course.
