So any predictions? I'll take 1:03:30 for his debut.
I don't get the Gwyneth Paltrow reference?
Prediction: 1:01:22 for fourth place.
If Hall can run 59:52 there is no reason why Rupp can't. I'm gonna go with 61:27 though because it his first.

of course Hall ran 59:43, but nice try there
61:54.

this is a serious wtf moment.
Rupp is turning into the James Franco of pro running - the biggest what-the-heck-I'll-do-it runner out there. An xc race in the snow in the UK with no one but Mo to race? A 3k indoors against Lagat? get me there! A 5k turkey trot? Yup. A slow half marathon 3 months away from the WC trials? line me up.
I'm becoming a big fan.
I don't see this as being a WTF moment at all. In fact it makes perfect sense. Rupp was preparing for a 10k AR attempt. He's probably in fantastic shape to run a great half marathon, and wants to actually do something with that shape since his 10k was scratched. His tactical 3k with only a fast last 600 was hardly worthy of "doing something" with his fitness that he was hoping to do something awesome with before preparing for outdoor season.
So he ran a 5k....it's ridic to even mention that it was a turkey trop. He ran it with Webb, and lost. It's not like he's been in a ridiculous amount of races compared to in college when he'd have to do several in XC season, and lots more in indoors. If his 10k wasn't canceled, you wouldn't see him in this half marathon.

coach d, you make an excellent point. your consistent trashing of rupp has convinced me that my lasting impression of rupp as a tough and talented competitor is mistaken. he is, as you helpfully continue to point out, an inconsistent chicken-sh*t pussy with no talent, work ethic, or any other redeemable qualities. in fact, true american fans of distance running have no business cheering for him at all, because he is, as your clear logic demonstrates, a cancer to the sport. thank you for your insightful analysis and helpful contribution to the board. there aren't enough posters like you at letsrun.
Nice ^

Even Galen Rupp will sneer at this course for being Rupp-certified.
I know it wasn't your main point but this looks suspiciously like Rupp bashing to me. Aren't you bigger than that?
its his first real road race. not a time trial course. 62:40. but a lot of potential for rupp (especially if he leaves salazar. but thats another topic)

Paranoia dude, it's a play on a meme. It's a whimsical wink.

Any word on who else is going to be in this race? It'd definitely be great to see him square off with some of the top marathon guys.
So far Meb, Hall, Smyth, Abdi, Cragg are the only ones I can think of. I don't think they have announced the full field yet..
Last year malmo mocked Rupp for waiting until the last minute to decide on Palo Alto vs. Eugene for his AE attempt in the 10,000m - a decision based on Rupp's allergies. Yet when Jim Ryun wheezes his way to a 4:17 mile due to hay fever, malmo is quick to defend Ryun. Seems contradictory to me.
Rupp's best distance is 10,000 and he has recently (last 6 months) upped his mileage, so it's not unreasonable to believe he'd be even better at longer distances. I think he'll break 62 first time out and his potential is certainly sub-60 before too long.
Galen Rupp is faster than Ryan Hall so far at 1609m, 5,000m, & 10,000m. Significantly faster.

When did I mock Rupp for having allergies? Besides, as far as I'm aware he has mild allergies, not a debilitating reaction that Ryun had.
I am sure that Ms. Wittenberg will bring in 21.1 km of Mondo surface for this event, so the course will be Rupp-certified.
Also, the race will probably not be started until Alberto gives the thumbs up sign, when the temperature, pollen count and humidity have aligned to IDEAL levels.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
HOPE THAT RUPP THE CRAZY DUCK POPS A FAST ONE!!!
If Rupp was going to extend his winter season this long I would have loved him to stay in Australia and race Solinsky and Lagat at 5k this weekend. He was in Australia for the 10k that got canceled and is more race ready than anyone except for Lagat.
Here is Rupp's last 3 weeks.
5k in Germany, 5k in UK the next week, then all in one week fly to Australia, fly back to US, 3k in New Mexico.
Pretty bad ass, but I wish the 3k was traded for the 5k this week. I figured Galen didn't want to stay in Australia and run the 5k which logistically a lot easier because the plan was to take a break starting after the 10k which was supposed to be last week so they wanted to stick to that time schedule. Clearly I was wrong on that (unless Rupp really shocks people and says he is running the full NYC marathon in the fall- i think that would crash the boards).
Having said that as a fan I love how Galen has been racing a lot. Makes the winter much more interesting as a fan. He has shown for 3 years now he can race at a high level year round.
Rupp's winter season now will be longer than his winter season last year.
Alberto had talked about having 2 distinct seasons this year here:
http://www.letsrun.com/2011/alberto-galen-0111.php
That plan could still be in place if they take more downtime after March and don't have Rupp gearing up for races in May like last year.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
