That would be pretty sweet... although I don't expect a great performance (kid's gotta be fatigued from travel and perhaps hasn't been doing XC/Half training), I hope he runs controlled and has a great debut to build off of for a 2012 10,000m/Marathon double a la Frank Shorter, et al.
I agree. Very interesting. Not an easy course for a serious road racing debut.
Awesome news. Salazar said after last season that Rupp needed to seriously increase his mileage - it would be fantastic if he were running 13:11 for 5K off high-volume work, not at all "sharp."
this is a serious wtf moment.
Rupp is turning into the James Franco of pro running - the biggest what-the-heck-I'll-do-it runner out there. An xc race in the snow in the UK with no one but Mo to race? A 3k indoors against Lagat? get me there! A 5k turkey trot? Yup. A slow half marathon 3 months away from the WC trials? line me up.
I'm becoming a big fan.
Rupp is a BAMF
Wow...Never...In..my Life...Did I ever..Suspect..Rupp would do a..half...Thats amazing. That would be one AMAZING half marathon if Rupp entered.
I must agree it is becoming interesting seeing what he will do next. And the fact that most of it is announced beforehand it is easy to follow. When will others begin to take on these thoughts, and do what is good for the sport as a whole?

What are you taking about not easy? NYC HM is a great course. Downhill. Early morning start. Prevailing winds at your back.
good move for rupp in preparation for his marathon debut at the olympic trials in houston january 14th 2012, i expect him to run the marathon trials as an insurance in case he does not make the olympic team in the 5 or 10k the USA has more good runners than there are spots on the team at 5 and 10k, i figure lagat will get a spot at 5k and 10k if he wants to double, then you have solinsky, ritz, teg, rupp and probably more by 2012.
right now i think rupp would make at least the 10k team for the olympics.
so i expect him to run the trials marathon to make sure he has a olympic spot, and the actual marathon will give him a better shot at a medal.
take this to the bank rupp will one day run sub 2:07 and could challenge for the american record in the half and full marathon.

If he was, he would be on the way to Oz to run with the big dogs.
Coach D. - How much do you want to bet the "big dogs" run slower in Melbourne than Rupp just ran in Birmingham?
He's got his qualifier, weeks before Solinsky or Tegenkamp.
IMHO - For Rupp, the longer the distance the better. Expect greatness.
(For all the Rupp/Oregon haters out there, I am neither a Rupp fan nor an Oregon fan. I just think Rupp has tremendous longer distance potential and could well be America's #1 marathoner in a few years.

downhill? well, some. Half the race in the rolling hills of CP - the last third is flat.
winds can go any way in manhattan - often seems that they are coming in all directions. They could be in rupp's face for miles - I did a run last month down what is also the hm course - constant 15 mph winds in my face.
i like this move by rupp. running is all about match-ups makes it interesting to talk about. u think what do some guys think of others when they enter their ring.
like what do u think ryan hall thinks about galen rupp?
do u think he'll fear racing him or will he think the kids only good at shorter events. (the latter would be a dumb thought)
i don't think they've ever raced each other but if so it was on the track and i'm sure rupp beat him pretty bad
or a guy like meb, does he stand a chance against rupp in a half?
well it will def be hyped up well. i just hope that rupp won't start doing a bunch of road races, i dont think he will cuz it'll keep him mysterious and a hyped attraction which will make him loads of money in appearance fees.

Also, why would he want to make that flight across the Pacific again? Seriously this is a great idea for him to run a HM just for kicks.
Any word on who else is going to be in this race? It'd definitely be great to see him square off with some of the top marathon guys.

coach d, you make an excellent point. your consistent trashing of rupp has convinced me that my lasting impression of rupp as a tough and talented competitor is mistaken. he is, as you helpfully continue to point out, an inconsistent chicken-sh*t pussy with no talent, work ethic, or any other redeemable qualities. in fact, true american fans of distance running have no business cheering for him at all, because he is, as your clear logic demonstrates, a cancer to the sport. thank you for your insightful analysis and helpful contribution to the board. there aren't enough posters like you at letsrun.
Let the predictions begin.
I say 61:28.

Oh my gosh, little itty bitty Gwenneth Paltrow rolling hills? Oh the poor dears.
Even Galen Rupp will sneer at this course for being Rupp-certified.
