I agree with you for the most part. If it weren't for work, I don't think I would still be active.
People use it in different ways, not everyone is a bragging douche. I am 31 and have about 800 friends, most of which are current offline friends and business associates from around the country.
It is not just kids using FB, I am friends with the Head of Communications for a dozen major metropolitan hospital chains. People making seven figures. The kicker is that they use it all the time.
I use it to share pictures with family, etc. I don't update my status at all. I message people and generally stay in touch with others, but nothing too time intensive. Basically, when you have business associates across the country, it can help your relationship with them.
Certain industries would black ball you for not involving yourself in social media. For instance, if you want to get into PR, Communications, Crises Management, Marketing, etc - you better damn well have a presence online.
Just food for thought.
