1) Most top 400/800 runners don't run the 500 indoors. Kerron Clement surely would have destroyed the record the year he broke the 400 indoor record. I would give him high 58's no doubt.
2) Ncaa's champs (you know the race the best peak for) does not have the 500.
3) No one trains for the 500, those that race it are training for the 400, or are 400h guys outdoors, or 800 guys getting some speed races in.
If the best ran it, and it was an Ncaa champ event. You can bet there would be tons of times faster than he just ran.
OK, but realize all that applies to Loxsom too. He doesn't train for the 500 either. He isn't peaked as he would be for NCAA's either. If this were a championship event, he would probably be running much faster than 61.2 by the end of the season too.
Just appreciate it for what it is, an early season race at a weird distance. We can compare it to other collegiates though, because odds are the guys running this are 400 or 800 guys. Looking back I do see that Gagnon and Rutt ran the 500 in 2009 - Rutt as late into the season as Feb 21 at his conference meet. And Rutt ran 1.2 seconds slower than Loxsom did here; Gagnon 1.4 seconds.
