Pepper spray for me as well. I travel for work so I need to be prepared to run anywhere. I have never used it, but more likely than not there will be a dog one day who will need redirection.

If you're reasonably fast and male, you're not likely to need a gun anyway, because you just run your way out of any trouble.
However, a much more likely scenario is that you're out jogging at 5:00AM and you hear some girl screaming for help being dragged into the bushes. That's where you'll wish you had a gun. And Coop, if there are 2 rapists you're going to wish for more than a 1 shot derringer.
There have been several instances of female joggers being attacked in the Seattle area lately. Last one was an 89 year old lady who chased off the attacker.

Have you had instance to pull the knife out when attacked by any dogs? What happened in these cases?

From the article: "Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger – loaded with hollow-point bullets – when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes."
Ok. I have some experience with firearms. And I have come across snakes on runs before. I honestly cannot ever envision needing to engage snakes in a gun battle to somehow escape from them.
My whole body is a weapon.

nope, thank goodness, i'm a dog person at heart, but there ain't no way in hell i'm gettin my ass bit because owners are too stupid and lazy to control their dogs
i live in a quiet area of the UK and don't feel the need to carry a weapon. But when i run in the US i carry a family size bag of M&M's to scatter at the slightest sign of trouble.

How ironic. Whenever I travel to the UK and feel threatened, I just pull out a toothbrush and watch 'em flee! (Just kidding -- I love my buddies from across the pond.)
WTF?
If you have to carry a gun on a run, you don't need to go for a run in that area.
I can understand having pepper spray for a loose dog or if someone happens to mess with you during the run, but a gun?
The very notion of going for a run while carrying a gun is absurd. None of you do this.
I've run in very bad neighborhoods. We had a run in college called MLK where we ran down MLK Blvd for about 5 miles and then back. As everyone knows, all cities put MLK Blvd in terrible neighborhoods where people get killed all the time (hyperbole). We would always do the run shirtless with super short shorts. Never had any trouble. Most people would point in laugh. Some people would join in for a few strides.
I don't know, there have been alot of instances of women attacked on popular suburban running trails. I can recall an incident just last year in Southern Calif (San Diego area) where an 18yr old girl was dragged off, raped and killed. It is not infrequent and not necessarily confined to "bad" or urban areas. That Ruger LCP mentioned earlier is tiny and may provide a means of defending the otherwise defenseless.
