Lucy, this may seem like an idiotic post at first, but there is actually a firm line of reasoning behind this. What some very well known coaches have maintained is that overtraining, and a lack of proper recovery from workouts leads to sluggishness (lack of awareness, alertness, quick response to missteps) and being brittle. As result, ankle twists, hitches in the stride that lead to more serious bouts with legitimate long-term injuries, illnesses, often are the result from overtraining.
Then again, maybe you just get attacked by a dog on your long run...who knows
