In conventional food production systems, not all pesticides remain on a plant’s exterior. Systemic pesticides are chemicals that are actually absorbed by a plant when applied to seeds, soil or leaves. The chemicals then circulate through the plant’s tissues, killing the insects that feed on them. Use of these pesticides on food crops began in 1998, and has steadily increased during the past 10 years. Unlike with traditional insecticides, you can’t wash or peel off systemic pesticide residues because they’re in the plant’s tissues, not on their exteriors.

Yet from 1998 to 2008, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of 85 infectious disease outbreaks linked to raw milk. In the past few months, physicians have treated salmonella in Utah, brucellosis in Delaware, campylobacter in Colorado and Pennsylvania, and an ugly outbreak of E. coli O157-H7 in Minnesota, which sickened eight people in June. Epidemiologists not only identified a rare strain of the bacteria but matched its DNA to those stricken, the cows on the farm that supplied them with raw milk, and manure smearing the milking equipment and even the animals themselves. When regulators shut down the dairy farm, supporters promptly charged them with belonging to a government conspiracy to smear the reputation of a hallowed food.

Have been drinking the stuff since I was about 5 years old. Absolutely no harm done. In fact, I believe I'm better off for it.

All dairy products are not created equal. Today's milk, cheeses, and other dairy products are radically different in nutritional value and chemical composition than they were 50 years ago. American dairy products are also vastly different than dairy products in other countries. Have you ever noticed that butter from France tastes different from butter from America? Have you noticed that the same kind of cheese tastes different depending on what part of the country or world in which it was produced?

There are vast differences in dairy products due to multiple factors. These differences mean that the dairy products affect the body in vastly different ways. Example: raw milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized, that came from a cow that was organically raised, was free-roaming, grass fed, not given antibiotic or growth hormone injections, will affect the body much differently than milk coming from a genetically modified cow that has been given antibiotic and growth hormone injections, never allowed to roam, is fed chemically laced growth enhancing feed, and has been pasteurized and homogenized. The problem occurs when studies are conducted and researchers do not use raw organic milk. They use the chemically laced, pasteurized and homogenized milk. If they were to conduct the studies comparing organic raw milk versus the supermarket variety, we would see dramatically different results. The bottom line here is the standard supermarket variety of milk and dairy products are very unhealthy. Homogenization makes the dairy products scar the arteries in your body and is a leading cause of heart disease. Organic raw, unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk, cheese and dairy products are incredibly healthy. Remember, science is not better than nature. When man gets involved and changes things from its natural state to increase profits, the food no longer is "real"; it becomes a man-made look-alike imitation.

you do realize that plants make insecticides that are transported throughout the plant body. You cannot wash these off either. But that's ok, because they are natural, and not supernatural.

Way too inconvenient. How many people do you know who go overboard and consume too much fruit of any kind?

Organic food is important because of the pesticides that are used, especially on fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables with "thin" skin is particularly at risk because the skin (like human skin) is trans-dermal, meaning that whatever you put on it, goes through the skin and into the actual fruit/ vegetable.

The raw milk cult is one of the strangest things I have seem. People give all these testimonials about how healthy they are because of raw milk (ignoring the fact that people who seek out raw milk tend to do other things that are healthy), but it is all based on hand-waving and pseudo-science. They seem to forget that we went through the experience of raw milk, in fact that was the norm before pasteurization.

Here's what a September 5th, 1910 article had to say about the milk in NY (not pasteurized): "The problem now is not how to get tge most nutritious milk, but one which does not kill" and "But in New York City the main problem appears ti be not how we shall secure the best growth for our children but how we can best keep them alive so they can grow at all." Back then, most everyone drank raw milk (low temperature pasteurization which didn't alter the taste having been just recently developed), and outbreaks of disease from this were rampant. Now, raw milk is a tiny niche product, but it's still enough to cause outbreaks. If everyone drank it, we'd go right back to the "good old days".

We have a "conscious" farmer here in MN (Hartmann Farm, Gibbon, MN) currently being charged with various things after several cases of E coli O157:H7 cases were found to be originating there (all cases with genetically identical isolates, which were also isolated from: the cows, pens, pasture, steer yard, and sheep). He had lost his license to sell grade B milk (let alone A), was not certified as organic, and was selling raw milk both at the farm (legal) and off farm (illegal). 8 kids known to be made ill (rough rule of thumb with foodborn illnesses is that usually 1 of 10 cases are seek care and are recognized as being part of an outbreak), 5 hospitalized, 1 who developed a known complication (hemolytic uremic syndrome) that shut down the child's kidneys. Takes an awful lot of benefit to make up for a lifetime of dialysis (or dealing with a kidney transplant).

I just want to point out that there is a middle-of-the-road alternative...

Milk that is pasteurized but does NOT contain antibiotics and rBGH.

I understand there is more to the discussion, but most people do not realize there are multiple alternatives.
