times? We need to know how much to care.
"Show me the money or I'll walk off the way I walked on"
Walk in the coaches office and ask him.
"Hey, coaches. Can I have a scholarship?"
I'm a college coach. I get asked for scholarship money all the time. It is part of the job.
You should ask. Fair's fair.
If the coach is not convinced that you are at the appropriate level to warrant scholarship aid, ask what sort of performance range is he looking for.
Also, you've got to think a bit about what amount of scholarship aid you're looking for. A full? 3/4's? Half?
A 1/3 or a 1/4? Is it all or nothing?
Be polite. Tell him that you've enjoyed the season tremendously and that you think he's been great to run for and you want to continue because you think you will do even better in the future. I'm assuming all these statements to be true.
You should also realize that the NCAA does not allow for mid-year increases due to athletic performance. This scholarship would be for next year.
With regards on what to say, speak the truth. Most coaches enjoy giving scholarship money to those who deserve it. If you have done well academically, this will likely help your cause.
I 100% agree with the coach above who says that you should say that you feel that you will do even better next year. In addition, you could say that this financial assistance will better help you train in the future.
Thanks for the responses so far. I know I can't get an increase mid-year, but I am currently not receiving any money. Should I talk to the coach after this season or wait to see how track season goes? I feel like if I wait too long all the scholarship money will be signed out to new recruits already. Am I off base with that thought?
Tell him the money will help out your finances and you'd rather focus on running and staying on the team instead of cutting back your training and taking a part-time job.
Bring it up after the XC season. This would give you a chance to come up with some targets for track....
Ultimately you just want to start the dialogue.
I was sure scholarships were yearly or semesterly. I think if you ran great during XC you could ask for one for spring. There are more than just tuition monies...Our 16 min guys who were usually 5th-8th man on the team just got books paid for. Hey that could be $3-400!

Just curious what your progression (times-wise) was from "suck ass walk on transfer" to #1? I'm not trying to judge if you deserve the $$$, just curious what the Malmo Magic did for you.
where do you go to school?? i wanna go! haha
Was a 26 mid guy coming in. PR'd every race this season. Went from 25:3x to 25:1x. I plan on breaking 25 at our conference meet.
And beat my track 5000 pr on an xc course the first meet in 90 degree heat and humidity.

Props. Best of luck dropping into the 24s!
Talk to him asap so he doesn't go recruit with aid before "rewarding" you.
I had to ask my coach if a 1:49 was worth scholarship money at the end of my freshman year. His initial reaction, "where do you think I'm going to get money from?"
A day or 2 later he called me into the office and offered me a half ride.
My experience = If you don't ask, they won't offer.
How many asses did you have to suck? And did you enjoy the ass-sucking?
that's FN awesome
