Just wanted to give a bit of commentary on these 3 schools, both academically and athletically.
Academically, I think if you're looking for a d-3 school in the west, these will be your best bets. now, they are not "easy" to get in to, but easier than their SCIAC counterparts, CMS, Pomona Pitzer, CIT or Oxy. Each school has their own specializations, and you can look into that on your own. Weather is better at CLU and La Verne, compared to Redlands (hot and nasty). All 3 have nice campuses, Redlands has the best track. Also, all 3 coaches have been there for only 3-4 years i think.
Cal Lutheran: First off, they are great in sprints. Coach Matt Lea (Head track + XC) was a great sprinter in his day (ASU or U of A?), and did well as a sprints coach at UCSB. Pretty sure CLU 4x400m won the SCIAC this season. They have some strong individuals on the distance side, Ostrander and Kahovec (female), but drop off quite a bit after that. Both have done well thus far in their careers at CLU. The graduation of Brian Kahovec really hurt them this season. Oh, have one of the best hammer throwers in the NCAA as well, also boasting a sweet 'stache.
Redlands: Coach Mike Schmidt (Head Track + XC) has done well on the track side of things (beating CMS at SCIAC women's track champs in his first year!), and has done well with the women's distances. Women's XC team is currently ranked in the W. Region, and beat out Pomona Pitzer this past weekend. on the men's distance side, it seems like they are neglecting the recruiting; only 3 frosh this year. Top runner, Kalmus has had his best season as a Bulldog yet, but again, there's a slight drop off after him. Duncan Ashby will be the top returner next season (solid runner), but #3 Alec Fillmore graduates, so losing #'s 1+3 will question their team's strength.
University of La Verne: Coach Mike Atwood (Head XC + distances in track) has done a surprising job the past 2 seasons in the distances. A provisional qualifier in the 1500 last season (did not qualify, i think he was in top 30), but not returning for xc(? not sure what's going on there). They had the top freshmen at the recent Multi-Duals, which is a good sign. Looks to be the up-and-coming team in the SCIAC, being ranked in the W. Region just behind Pomona Pitzer. Very young, and thus, somewhat inexperienced, but could give PP a run for their money in 2011. CMS will likely still dominate, but the new battles for 2nd place look to be between Pomona and La Verne.
