I've noticed a lot of people refer to the girls on their school's teams as their "team mates"...though they aren't really teammates in any technical sense of the word. what's the general consensus on this?

everyone in my xc team is my teammate whether it be a girl or boy
If the men and women are all under the same coach/program, it seems normal to call them teammates. If the programs are separate, probably not. It's really just preference though I guess since you are correct in saying guys and gals aren't technically teammates since they're on different teams.
I consider the members of the guys and girls XC teams to be teammates and the members of guys and girls track teams to be teammates. They're usually in the boys and girls divisions of the same competitions, run more or less the same events, etc.
