I've been 'in the thick of things' four times in a real meet like the NCAAs and I don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Running a cross country race isn't anything like a traffic jam on a freeway.
I don't see how being in the pack affects your ultimate placing. In fact, starting out in the pack is often the best strategy for XC running as you don't go out too hard.
