I am interested in knowing who is the best.
I am interested in knowing who is the best.
I'll start with the top 3
1. Geoff Roes (unbeatable right now)
2. Anthony Krupicka (when he is on...he is on fire)
3. Scott Jurek (1-24 hour race put him up here)
He doesn't run 100 milers and he isn't purely an ultra runner, but Uli Steidl has to be in the top 10 based on his North Face 50 victory and CR.
Dean K.
does Josh Cox qualify as an ultrarunner?
One thing that makes this a bit tough to answer is that some ultrarunners stick exclusively to mountainous races, while others stick to flat and smooth races. If we're talking about the 100 mile distance (arguably the most followed) Geoff and Anton are probably the top two at the moment. Going to flatter courses, runners like Zach Gingerich and Dave James have put up some impressive 100 mile times in the past year. Scott Jurek is one of the few that has been able to be competitive at all terrains, and I'd certainly include him on a top 10 list.
One of the biggest difficulties in compiling an objective list is that most courses and times are not comparable due to their variations in both terrain and weather. It is tough to say if Geoff Roes' 15:07 on the Western States course is better or worse than Dave James' 13:06 split at the North Coast 24 Hour, so some of it will always be subjective.

Even if he does I don't think he would make the top ten.

Zach Gingerich. He won Badwater and the Arrowhead Ultra this year (both 135 miles). He also won the FANS 24 hour race. He has the course record at the Kettle Moraine 100 as well as the Umstead 100 (ran 13:xx). He's also won a lot of 50-milers and set many other course records along the way.

LOL! I almost spit my Diet Dew all over the screen when reading that! Thanks for the laugh.......!
Who the hell drinks a diet soda? Diet Dew? Are you kidding me? Be a man, I'm sure you can take the 9 grams of sugar.
lol. I drink at least a 12-pack a day....it has to be diet or I'd be bigger than a house!
How about Serge Arbona? He just won the USATF 24 Hour National Championship.
Anton quits if it gets tough. He used to be undefeated in every race he finished... LOL.
The guy runs 200 miles a week at altitude and can't even finish Leadville. He's is completely overrated. Roes is newer to the sport and wins everything and breaks records doing it.
