Pretty self explanatory. Everyone likes to talk about what the elites are doing in their training RIGHT now, but we all know that the training that got them to the elite level is more what the average joe should try to replicate (sort of). What, in your own humble opinion, are the most important attributes to any training program in order to improve year after year?
1) Consistent volume - 75 miles per week 45-52 weeks a year is unbelievably better than 100 miles per week for 10 interspersed weeks and 50 miles per week for the other 40-42.
2) Tempo running - AT, threshold runs, whatever you want to call it, I think doing 4-8 miles at 85-90% max heart rate (5k pace plus ~30 seconds for me) almost every week of the year is the most effective workout in terms of progressing year to year.
3) Core/hip/back strength - If you aren't strong enough to run with the form of an elite, how are you going to train like one? Strong hips, lower abs, and back are the most important muscles (not legs, maybe except the hamstrings) for developing good fast efficient form.
