Ritzenhein ran 27:22 and then ran 12:56. Solinsky ran 26:59 then ran 12:56. Galen ran 27:10 so he should be able to run... 12:56!!!! :-)

King99 - the truth is in the pudding. I don't care what kind of "shape" he is in. He ran a 13:10 - a fine time but like another poster said ... he has been proclaimed a "13:00" runner for years now. He needs to step up to run with the big dogs. 13:10 just does not cut it any more.
Enough said. Sheesh!
NO MORE what kind of shape anyone is in. Rupp ran 13:10 - I DO NOT want to hear he is in sub 13 shape. I DO NOT want to hear that. He could have run that if he is. He did not. His career at standstill currently. Hopefully he can knock it back in line. Goede luck GAlen.

Please no more conjecturing - What Galen could have run in ideal conditions blah blah blah - he ran 13:10 - a bit disappointing
I'm not a Rupp fan, but the guy just PRd in a fast time....if he disappointed you in your crazy world, too bad. You can get help with your anal-cranial inversion problem from your primary care physician.

13:00 is still hard to break for non-Africans. You need to give him time to get used to these paces - perhaps for a few years - before he has his breakthrough. None of our sub 13 Americans did it overnight.
How about all those Africans who are younger, have less experience, less races in Europe, less time training, and are already running 12:58? How many years before they get used to the pace and run 12:40?
Look, this IS Rupp's breakthrough. He has been a vertual pro for about seven years now and has proven to be a 13:10 runner. I mean, do we really expect Rudisha to run a 1:39 when he gets to be Rupp's age? How about when he's 28, the same time we expect Rupp to hit his stride? Maybe a 1:37?
joseph ebuya, not as great on the track as he is off of it?
..........................................................
At a different level, I was like that myself and never really fugured out why (stride, lack of rythm, high arches,"mental thing", God knows what) I placed fairly high (31st) at World Cross one year and I'm pretty sure my 5k pr might have been one of the slowest in the entire field
Haile Geb ran a WR 12:38 and WR 26:22. This means his 5k split avg during his 10k was 33 seconds off his PB 5k. 12:38+33 seconds suggests he maintained 13:11 pace.
The A standard for the 5k a few years ago was 13:21 and the 10k was 27:48. The same method is applicable. It is suggested a 13:21k runner should maintain a 13:54 split avg(+33 seconds).
I have grown to accept this conversion to compare 5k's to 10k's. It varies with some runners. Based on my theory his 10k was worth a 13:02, so yeah-he kind of underperformed.
BTW my conversion also works to near perfection on Solinki (or is it Solinsky?) in any case this theory seems to hold in many cases.

Let's take a little perspective, last year in early July if Rupp ran 1310 everyone would be going wild. Not that 4(3) American's have broken 13 it's different. Totally different, at least in our minds. THIS, is still a really good run for him. Great stuff.
FIVE Americans have broken 13. They are ALL very much AMERICANS. Kennedy, Ritzenheim, Tegenkamp, Solinsky AND Lagat. ALL ARE ***AMERICANS***.
How many Brits, Spaniards, Japanese, Portugese, Chinese and Koreans have broken 13?? ZERO!! One German guy did, but he had some funky "toothpaste."
We are very proud of our speedy American boys.
Similar to Lebid, some guys are just better strength runners
it was a very messy race. Rupp did okay and up to the last lap looked like he was going to be right there with Farah.

Wow. I'm really impressed with the family values, work ethic, and culture of the Africans who still completely dominate distances.
Yes, that continent is filled with people who put those values first in all their endeavors.
LOL
If this result came in 2003 or 2004 you would be coming in your pants.
First of all, anytime you run a PR, it's a big deal, regardless of expectations or race conditions. Secondly, if this was the end of Rupp's season, he'd have a won the national championship, in addition to running 13:10 and 27:10. Thirdly, Solinsky's season is over, Ritz's never got started, and Rupp seems to periodize, so it would make more sense that this was merely a European debut. It's quite possible that he finishes the season sub-13:05 or better and with the AR in the 10,000 if he runs one -- no one else left to do it this year. By all acoounts, he's already had a solid year, and it doesn't appear to be over.
Congratulation Galen, though I doubt you waste your time reading letsrip.com like the rest of us.

That's
www.letsriprupp.comthat even the moderators seem to endorse, but it's the same effect in any event. Sub-26:59 wouldn't even be enough.
So far this year we've got:
Lagat: 12:54, 13:11 (indoors)
Solinsky: 12:56 and 13:08
Rupp: 13:10, 13:14 (indoor)
Curtis: 13:18
Nelson: 13:20
Just 5 years ago, we all went nuts when 3 guys (Goucher, Webb, Broe) ran 13:10-11 during the summer.
And the above is without last year's 2 sub-13 guys who are recovering from injury and Jager and Fernandez, the exciting newcomers.
Rupp's steadily working those PBs down as a previous poster pointed out. Keep up the good work!
It is nice that he PR'd but the bottom line is his progression is not good enough to land him an Olympic or World Championship medal anytime soon. Everybody here can look at times that other runners are posting and see that clearly. Again it is nice that he PR'd but he needs to step it up. Championship medals are what matter - this is not about hobby jogging and taking .0001 off your PB. This is about progressing in a way that puts you on a path to medal. We have the right to expect that from an athlete who has been given everything - good coaching and managers and a big contract. Not nearly good enough.
What makes you think this isn't part of the "path" to contending in a championship race? He picks his races very judiciously. So what? He may very well end up running sub-27:00 or sub-26:55 if he gets in a fast 10k THIS YEAR. You need to build confidence that you can run those kinds of times first before you start talking about contending.
The Olympics are two years away. It took Ritz until last year to really have that "breakthrough." Remember, while Ritz showed all the potential in the world, he was a 13:16 guy until last year. Sure, maybe he "could've" run faster earlier, but he didn't. Running is a seriess of progression and plateau, progression and plateau. I'd say Rupp is on the path.

Why do jackwads like Outlier seem to hold the fact that Galen has been supported as a bad thing?
Outlier, is Galen not "blue-collar" enough for you?
I think that we can all safely say that for us to have any hope of competing on the World stage we need to support our athletes...dipshit.
Very solid run for Galen.

This youngster is showing consistent improvement and has taken one more baby step in American move-up to the Africans.
Can we please get past this notion of 24 being a youngster in elite running? People even say things like that about people like Hall and Ritz (both 27), like "Give the kid some time."
