And yeah he was closer to 1:44 than 1:43 but wheating was closer to 3:52.
And finally 3:51 is not an insane time. It is about the same as Ulrey's 3:35 from last year.

Let this thread not degrade into "back in my day...we trained harder" crap. Old timers, Wheating is better.
All you have to do is look at the results to understand the quality of wheatings performance. This was Eugene, windy backstretch mid-day. When you are shredding up 3:32-3:34 (and that's assuming Lagat is not even a 3:31 or better guy anymore, but he did just win indoor worlds at 3K with a vicious kick)guys you are doing something right. This was not an evening race in Europe where all best times come.
As far as comparing to 1:43, that is fine and dandy and I'd agree. But as another poster stated, you'd have to have not seen Wheating the past few months to think he wasn't ready for 1:43-1:44.
Wheating made Ulrey look JV on the DMR mile, he absolutely blew him up and that is no disrespect to Ulrey. Hell Ulrey made the world team, has run 3:35 and won the indoor 3K. But Wheating is on the next level in the 1500/mile, just ask Leo, Lomong and Lagat.
