oregonlive.com, now says galen rupp will not run friday night in eugene as his coach alberto salazar says it is expected to be too cold and windy, and he probably wont run stanford either as salazar says rupp could get an allergy from the high pollen levels.
rupp may run saturday in eugene though if the 10k can be switched to saturday and the weather is good.

Nike should build him a 400 m track that is situated in a climate controlled building. The ultimate in Rupp certified. 50 degrees F (or whatever Galen prefers), and no wind or pollen.

Oregon/Nike is planning on building an impressive indoor track in a few years.
So Rupp might break the AR on Saturday morning, in front of a hundred people or so, in a race that wasn't scheduled to happen and won't have any competition (only rabbits). Kind of lame if you ask me.

why doesn't nike just build a robot that can be programmed to run at any pace and have all their athletes just run with the robot as a pacer for AR attempts
pollen and wind aside (which are lame excuses) just run at the Stanford meet, the race has a loaded field and would think each of them would like to run fast as well, pretty much a no brainer but then again I don't work for the Nike machine

Wow, Salazar. 50 degrees and no more than 10mph of wind are unacceptable conditions. He has pacers! That wind will feel like nothing. Oh, no 50 degrees! That may or may not be 2 degrees colder than optimal conditions..
I'm not one of the serial Rupp bashers, but sometimes you have to just show up and run.

seriously, that's the worst part. when I saw that forecast I thought, "man those are pretty much ideal conditions for a 10K."
I thought racing was about competition. All this time-trial crap is lame and uninteresting. Nothing was more boring than watching Webbs time-trial "race" to set the mile AR in some dinky no name Belgian meet with no competition. It's a great achievement and all that, but is it really track and field? I think not. Some might argue borders on illegitimate. I'd hate for Rupp's best effort to occur in the same kind of time-trial "event". Save it for something more important, like Worlds or the Olympics.

I doubt this is Rupp's best effort, probably just an early season effort from a guy who is very good and for the first time in 5 years hasn't had to arrange his year around an NCAA system.
I disagree. Look, Rupp is basically in a class by himself when it comes to American 10k runners (save for Ritz who isn't racing yet). He wants to go for the AR before the real racing season gets underway. What will he get out of going to Stanford where he can definitely win, but get his lungs packed full of crap that will prevent him from running his best? Also, if the conditions are going to be better on Saturday in Eugene, why not pick the day with the best opportunity to run the fastest? Good for him and AlSal for being smart and putting themselves in the best position to reach their goal. The kid's put it on the line in the last two world championships and raced well.... why can't you people get behind him?
I have absolutely nothing against Rupp. I admire his talent to no end. I'm just old school, I guess. I just hate seeing records set in time-trials. Save your best for the best, that's where it counts, that's where it REALLY matters. I believe that's what racing is all about. I'd rather see him set the AR in a losing effort to Bekele, than a winning effort against....um...the clock.
