UW-Madison has been with adidas for years. If we had a deal with Nike, it hasn't been within the past two decades(my recent memory). All the athletes wear adidas and get all that free adidas stuff.

The Che T-shirts have actually decreased in volume since the murdering Communist icon's image has been registered by filthy capitalists!(humor intended) Imagine that, just like the nasty Nike's, U of W, (or even alas PSU) trademarks. What a mixed-up, crazy world.
If the Wisconsin - Madison administration had any real balls on this stance they would not take money from ANY sporting goods company. I really doubt we'll see that though.
I'd like to see Oregon follow suit.
American Apparel? You seriously think American Apparel is a god company? They treat their workers worse than any Chinese sweatshop. Guaranteed.
And even New Balance claiming that their shoes are "made in USA" is somewhat of a misnomer. In reality, their stuff is actually "made" in Asian sweatshops and then shipped to Boston where an American worker stitches and glues a few pieces together. I work in a running specialty store and continuously encounter people (particularly elderly folk) who will buy New Balance exclusively simply because they are "made in America". Though it hasn't helped my sales commission, I've started pointing out the half-truth about this claim, simply because it's just that, a half-truth, and so they might be more willing to try to other things that could work better for them. Or just to take advantage of the opportunity to tell some pretentious hipster what he can do with his liberal faux-sensitivity.

Umbro is owned by Nike.
Maybe they will make their own running clothes out of hemp cloth.
Maybe adidas paid UW $50,000 to issue this press release.

Perhaps other programs (such as football or basketball) used Nike. I think I've seen schools where certain programs go with a sponsor like reebok while another sport go with nike etc.
Either way, it seems like a hypocritical pat on the back of those involved. Love to see their faces when they visit the facilities and eat with the families of the sub contractors of their new sponsors.

No, a shoe sponsor goes to a major university because it wants its logo on tv for football and basketball broadcasts, and typically the contract agrees to supply equipment to non-revenue sports as well. You're probably thinking of D2 or D3 programs or, at the very least, mid-majors. Also, as already noted on this thread, UW has been with Adidas for years and years, so the group behind this has probably been prompted to check out Adidas (which is not a "new sponsor") and all other apparel suppliers that have contracts with UW.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
